Sir,

I have an old U.S. Army 3 phase Generator Set… D.W. Onan model: 3ABG-4E, skid mounted, housed, 4 Cylinder, gasoline powered and liquid cooled with a Fairbanks-Morse XE4B16F magneto. It still runs and generates electricity; but it is very ugly. I would like to restore this GenSet to it's original beauty. The army disposed of this generator set in 1997 at a DRMO auction.

I need maintenance and operation manuals & more info

Is that a continental 4 cylinder engine? (according to Fairbanks-Morse Magneto information found on the internet, the XE4B16F fits a Continental 4 cylinder engine… please confirm.)

Are parts available?

When was it manufactured?

How much did it cost new?

What size battery does it take? (It looks like a 6 Volt golf cart battery might work… Please confirm)

Any Information would be greatly appreciated. Google search has not been productive.

Respectfully,

Tom Cline

It might help if you put up a serial number off the generator. Onans have a manufacturing date coded in the serial number which is described in the Onan FAQ at the top of this page.

Also pictures of the set would be helpful (usually). Engine side views, generator end, control panel etc.

Maybe Billy has something on it.

Ike looking at your DYD production order there was an issue with the heater. Can someone decipher this and tell us what part number heater he has? I will send you the files and drawings listed later when I have time.

The 3ABG used the Continental N56 engine. As did all ABG units.

The most common was a 120 volt heater. Which the production order shows.

Jim/Ike,

The standard Kim 2500W/115V heater was substituted with a 179-2222-01. I tried looking it up, but the page I wanted wasn't "available" right now. The 2222 number is not in the DYD parts manual at all. Guess I'm no help with the voltage right now--I will look at your old posts/pictures Ike and see if it looks familiar. If you could, take the end cover of the heater off, isolate the heating element and take an ohms reading with a good meter. We can probably make a somewhat educated guess from there.

Ike, I looked at the pictures I could find and never found a good photo of your heater. I see in one, what appears to be a much newer than original, possibly. Looks like maybe an aluminum-bodied Kim heater, with the black plastic electrical box on the end. Did you try using a mirror, and looking underneath the heater body? For some reason, these things almost always end up installed with the data tag facing in, or down.

Aloha
It would be interesting if you can find a listing for an Onan spec by the name of "DOD" for the military engines. I have seen some publications referenced to that spec, but have not been able to actually find anything on it except concerning the Ambac fuel injection pump.

Your 15 R generator should have 12 leads in the connection box behind the control cabinet. Take the top off and look for a silk screened diagram showing the reconnections for various voltages. Sounds like you need to follow the 3 (BIG as your finger) wires back into the the connection box to get to the reconnection splices.

Or are you talking about some wires smaller than that?

Jarhead PM me your email and I will get them to you. Bill your money is no good with me. As soon as I find the time to burn 18 CD's you got'em. They are worth a lot more to this board in your hands than mine.

Jarhead gotta go to work now but your spec is not in the database. This was done by Cummins clerks that missed a lot it seems. Tonight I am going to look up the closest Spec D to yours and send you that.
