Hi folks,
I have exhausted all my leads and have not been able to find a used clutch shaft. I am going to start looking into having one made. An extensive search through the US has turned up four parts tractors in four different states. Three of them have had the shaft removed, and the fourth one has a bad gear in it as well. Another 27-44 owner had a bad gear in his also, he found a used replacement a few years back.
Obviously, I have found the weak link, or problem area in this particular machine. Does anyone else want to get one of these made when I do mine? The survival rate of the large twin cam tractors is good, but very few are being restored. The vast majority of them are just sitting in a building somewhere......here is what I am betting on, the clutch shaft will be bad in several of these tractors and replacements are not available.
My intentions for this 27-44 is to use it, I will belt it up, plow with it, and make a few exhibition pulls over the years. I am hesitant to weld my gear up for fear of future failure. I would rather pay more now and not have to do it again later. I will begin calling gear vendors now...... If any of the educated stakkers have information or recomendations on gear makers, I would like your input. If you want one made, contact me anytime. 507-448-3749
It is very easy to determine if your gear is bad, pull the tank and tank saddle, Remove two bolt shifting fork cover and you can look straight down at clutch shaft gear.

Hey Tony, how's the 27-44 coming along? Did you find a source for the input shaft?

I love 27-44's - they are soooo meaty. There was a real nice one at the Fred Schneider sale here in Sask a few years back and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it. I think it was a 20-35 actually...

Tony.......I don't know if you've had any success finding a gear/gears but here's a fella not too far away from us who makes gears.
How much IS there to the clutch shaft?.......

Good Evening Everyone

Justin and I took the engine out of his 20-35 tonight, we had suspicion that "something" was wrong in the clutch housing. Last night when we put the oil pan on we saw that the output shaft was moving in and out ALOT, that kinda cued us in that "something was wrong." So out came the engine, turns out the Snap ring on the output shaft had beat itself off. Also the key was pretty beat up, so that will get replaced, Hopefully by the weekend it will be getting near completion.

Also Attached is a photo of a 20-40 Case that we are assembling, turing out to be quite the challenge.

Hello all, I have made some progress on the big twin cam. This bad gear buisness is slowing me down a bit, however, I may have located somone to make a new one for me, just waiting to hear back. While I wait, I have had a new radiator core made, ordered new square head bolts and gasket tape. New clutch frictions have been made, and several hours have been devoted to scraping grease, chasing bolt threads, new grease zerks, tie rod pins, etc.
Antique engine specialist Todd Cory has bored and decked the block (one sleeve was recessed), crankshaft was turned, .045 over aluminum pistons are on hand and main and rod bearings will be poured soon.
Picture #3 shows shifting fork rail caps. If you own a small or big twin cam tractor, do take time to remove these caps and lubricate dryed out shifting rails, detent balls and springs. This will make your 12-20, 17-28, 20-35 or 27-44 shift smoother and easier preventing a bent fork or broken shifting componets.
I still need a set of lugs for the 28 inch road wheels.

thank you for considering my registry. I have obtained the serial number, it is 712 out of 839 and would be a 1929.
Yes, it has turned cold here, soon I will be touring out onto the lake by snowmobile to go ice fishing

There are currently three 27-44's being restored that I am aware of. Dave & Lawrence Wilson in NC are working on #335, mine is #417 and Jim Andersons #26 is the oldest 27-44 that we know about at this point.

Somtimes the progress is slow, and with several of us posting here we can keep it more interesting.
The big twin cams are an impressive tractor for their size. I love to plow with antique equipment, and I have a dream to one day do a two or three tractor hook and pull groups of tandem hitch rope trip plows with 27-44's
Maybe a bit of an amitious dream, but just imagine three of these bruisers pulling 18 to 21 bottoms.....48 valves.....12 cylinders......I can see and hear it just fine
Of course I dont know if it will ever happen

Hi Mike
I got infected with old tractors at the age of 14 when I saw an old 17-28 Twin City.
Here is the sign that came with the tractor. Reuben is a son in law to Nathan so the tractor was still in the family when it came out of Saskatchewan Canada. #25 was the official Nebraska test tractor in May of 1926 so I'm not sure about the dates on the sign. Tony Thompson found the 27-44 for me last winter after we changed our minds about pursuing #38 at the Bridgeport auction last April. Now the important thing is going all the way through the tractor to make sure it can be taken out and enjoyed without any unexpected failures. Parts for these big Twin Cities can be hard to find.

I ran across some 27-44 Twin City pictures and they show what the tractor looks like with a canopy. The picture from the rear looks like a small platform on the fenders on each side.

time for a progress report on the 27-44. There was no water in the engine oil at the time of teardown, and boiling the block out and letting it sit full of water showed no signs of sleeve leakage. Block has been bored , decked, and honed. Crankshaft was turned. Rods were reconditioned, and modified to accept modern aluminum .045 pistons. New babbit bearings were appointed, and finished throughout with carefull attention given to journal fillet, and thrust clearance. With align boring, and crankshaft test fit, and spin done, the rotating assembly is finally complete.

We hauled home a pair of Road King rear wheels to put on the 27-44. The wide wheels give the tractor an impressive foot print. Then to dress up the wheels we had lugs cast at Tomahawk Foundry in Rice Lake Wisconsin. They did an excellent job and were very nice people to work with.

It takes some good planks between the trailer deck and tractor wheels.
We had enough cast to do Tony's Road King wheels and a set for mine with a few extra lugs for spares. It takes 128 lugs per set. They weight about 3 lbs each.

The arrival of spring is EXTRA buisy around here! I bought a fifth wheel camper to provide quality time with my beautiful wife and nine year old daughter. We have been dealing with hobby livestock, a big garden, acreage maintainance.......sounds like life......we must be living good
My good friend Jim Anderson is doing a 27-44 also, and we have been making or buying two sets of parts as we go. Some progress has been realized in between all the madness, but I really dont have much for pictures to post at the moment.
Thanks for asking, and Jim or I will pop in and give you folks some eye candy a bit later when we get a chance to spend more time in the shop

Time for a progress report on the 1928 TC.
The clutch in this machine was rusted tight. The layers of components were consumed by moisture and rust making removal of clutch difficult. The assembly had to be pried apart and the release springs crumbled out in pieces all over the floor.
I ran the parts through my abrasive blast cabinet and realized one of the drive plates was cracked
This is a common problem with Twin Disc type clutches. My 21-32 had a broken plate and my 20-35 had a broken plate as well. These plates often develope a hairline crack at drive pin hole running all the way to center.
I found a drive plate in North Dakota at the Rudy Dodzenrod estate sale (former MM dealer). Twin Disc clutches are a good design in general and are found in many aplications. They use a cast pressure plate at each end, a drive plate driven by three pins on back of flywheel and two floating frictions. when applied, or pinched together they make a very effective clutch.
Twin City engineers built the big twin cams to take the place of the aging heavyweight line. In an effort to get the large torque figure of a 641 cubic inch engine to the ground without slipage or failure they doubled up the existing design.
These units used two drive plates driven by six large flywheel pins, four frictions and a center steel plate in between the cast pressure plates at each end. First picture shows the shifting cone and yolk. This unit sets cone running clearance via shims in between the yolk halfs like an engine rod bearing does. I have photographed it with a wire running through to illustrate grease path to clutch shaft. This hole can be plugged so tightly that you may not realize it was there and will certainly not alow grease in on the shaft.
Next pic is all parts layed out after having a machinist friend mill or turn off anywhere up to 12 thousandths from each friction contact face to ensure a smooth operating clutch.
Third photo is at half assembly and shows new nickle plated release springs. last pic shows six drive pins with renovated assembly.
