Default Rider Ericsson hot air engine factory photos

I thought those of you who haven't been to Walden, NY would enjoy seeing what the old Rider-Ericsson factory looks like nowadays. It's still standing, in fairly good shape, but still unrestored and unprotected. This facility began as the Rider Engine Co. in the 1870s before it became the Rider-Ericsson Engine Co. in the 1890s when the Rider Co. joined forces with DeLamater Iron Works from NYC. Rider-Ericsson closed down in the 1930s when the buildings were occupied by the Spence Engineering Co. A small business called the Packaged Lighting Co. bought the buildings (mostly for storage) when Spence moved to new facilities in the ......(can't remember). The buildings were sold again recently to a new private owner when the owner of Packaged Lighting passed away.

I had the opportunity to go through the buildings several times over the past decade. Unfortunately there was nothing left from the R-E days except a huge boring mill, the old company desk, and an overhead crane hidden by modern ceiling tiles.

This was the largest and most productive hot air engine company in the US if not the world.

I've also seen that engine at Spence--it's a restored 5-inch Ericsson and is on display in their lobby; it's all they have from the the old factory. Unfortunately the Rider-Ericsson company records were apparently thrown out.

S. Mullins: Sorry I'm not a KY native, just a transplant.
