Default NEED 1A21 rod bearing!

I am in dire need a used single rod bearing set with shims for my 1A21 generator. A complete used rod would be fine. I use this genny to pump water once a week and the slight rod knock went from bad to worse last use. The babbitt on #3 is gone right down to the brass shell so there is nothing left to scrape and fit. I REALLY need a set to get me back up and running for the winter. Hopefully someone here has one to sell me? PM here or text to 906 three91 zero255. Mike

Bill,
Did you happen to have a set of rod bearings?

Yes I have a set of bearings. These are out of an older DC machine but I think they will fit. Email me and send me your phone number. Will send photo.

Exclamation Re: NEED 1A21 rod bearing!

Make sure the journal is square (same dimension at both sides - all the way around and in the center) and not egged out, or you will eat the new bearing rather quickly. What oil are you using? Should be SAE 30 NON detergent above 40 F or SAE 20 Non-detergent below 40F. No multigrade or detergent oils! DO NOT use modern auto engine oils or lubricants! With one journal gone, make sure the windage tray under the conrods is not rusted out, and that the bearing feed holes line up with the feeder in the rod. Make sure the cap is installed in the correct orientation too. If reversed, the bearing will starve for oil. Make sure the oil pump is working and that the pick up screen is clean.

The 1A-21 is a reliable set. Check oil level at every start, and make sure the set itself is level. If it is tipped, it will starve the rods for sure. Make sure the oil is coming out the overflow in the sight hole in the rocker cover. That oil is what fills the windage tray and feeds the con rod big end bearings.

When you fill the engine with oil, be sure to dump a pint down the passage where the overflow dumps, to fill the tray for 1st start. After that, as long as the generator is not moved, you should be good. Yoo should see oil coming out the overflow, in the sight hole, within 30 seconds of engine start. No oil - shut down and investigate!

All good advice Andrew and spot on!

I ended up tearing the entire engine down as I have never seen such a sludged up engine as dirty as this one. The oil tray had over a half inch of hard sludge wherever the rods cleared. I doubt much oil was getting to the rods. The other 3 are still perfect though. The oil pan had over an inch of tar in the bottom. Not real sure how oil was even making it to the screen but I did have good flow in the sight hole. I ordered a full set of rings from Dave Reed/Otto as the bores and pistons show very little wear. The set was just shy of $100.

It sure doesn't take long for a small project to derail does it
I just can't stand putting this wonderful old iron back together dirty. Should be a great little unit when back running. It is my main 110v source.
