Default Kohler 5ecd 2012 ish model

I am a pretty salty repair man and repair board level circuits as well.
This genny is in my personal boat. The genny is a Kohler 5ecd. Probably a 2012ish model.
It got to where it would loose its flash about every 30 days or so, and then it wouldnt stay running, even while field flashed. Then one day, it started, kinda, bogged real bad, then smoke every where. Stator shorted.
Got a freshly rewound stator, and it still wont run right. It will try to bogg, until I figured out the bogg was because it was generating 175-195 volts. So I quit that.
I am also continually getting a “UU” under voltage message. I have checked and replaced the SCR and are about to order a Voltage Regulator.
I have also noticed that the “crank” LED on the RIB board no longer comes on.
I have checked all the components on the RIB board and they are fine.
Also, I can remove the FP-FN wires from the SCR and connect to 12 volts and the output voltage is in the 125 range, but the controller still wants to shut it down with a “UU” code!
Your thoughts are appreciated!

Have you checked the brushes to make sure they’re not overly worn and can move in the holders? There is also the possibility that when the static shorted the field coil was damaged too.

Brushes measured within spec. Move freely.
Shop tested rotor with a growler.
Said it works fine.

I installed new slip rings also, but did not turn them down on a lathe.
Brushes fit but the brush holder is super close to the ring. However, they meter as they should.

One more question, how important is the polarity of the slip ring/brushes?
The schematic was not clear which ring or which rotor wire to tge slip connects to pos or neg.
Thanks.

As far as I know, there is no issue with polarity for the brushes. The basic operation of any rotating field generator doesn’t care about polarity of the field, the only thing that would make it matter is if they snuck some electronics into the rotor.

If all the wiring and connections look ok, you could try a new regulator. I don’t have any familiarity with the specifics of your particular unit so I can’t offer much more help with diagnostics, unfortunately.
