Default SAE Middle Ages Engine history book Worth buying ??

I have seen the following book mentioned in several bibliographies:

Horst O. Hardenberg,
the Middle Ages of the Internal Combustion Engine 1794-1886, Society of Automotive Engineers
Inc, Warrendale, Pennsylvania, USA,1999,

Are any of you familiar with it or have read it? I was considering buying it however it is out of print and the price seem to range from about $90 - $300 from used book stores. I sure don't want to spend that kind of money if it is not worth it.

Here is a link to a Albris search for it:,%201794-1886

Goodday Wayne I would guess it's information we have read about in other engine history? You could ask your local library to order in a copy?
While I'm on line --Thanks for all the info on your restoration project--as expected better than great! ! ! ! "All the best" Larry

Never read the book but a quick search on shows copies in libraries in Buffalo, Ithaca and Syracuse. Perhaps you can borrow a copy to evaluate whether you really need it.
I have borrowed some really interesting books from our local university, UW-Madison, over the years. They have a complete set of several of the trade journals from the early days, Power, Gas Review, American Thresherman, etc.
Good luck!

Amazon has a few used starting at $80... Used

Many Librarys if they dont have it can get it for you, especially college librarys because they have a very large interlibrary loan program through most colleges around the U.S.

Shoot I can even check out books from the Smithsonian through my College Library, it takes about 3 weeks to get them though. Neat program, I am not sure how much they charge for non-students though?

But I dont blame you for wanting to Check one out before you invest in one!

Keep us posted.
