Back to basics then, with power applied to the + terminal of the coil use a jumper wire on the points side of the coil. With the points in the open position scratch the jumper wire along an exposed metal part of the generator to simulate the points opening and closing, do you get a spark at the plugs, if so the coil and wires are good. With the points closed open them with a bit of wood or plastic, do you get a spark at the plugs if so the points and condenser are good. Next rotate the engine and watch that the points actually open and close and are not stuck or the cam. Try above and report back. Cheers Dan

Cool Re: What have you done to your Onan generator today?

Washed my 5.0 BGA today. Looks much better. Idles well after not running and setting for several years. Need to change the oil and check the points.

Has anyone ran a hei module and a gm v6 dual output coil on one of these?

Picked up a old MTD rider mower tonight. Going to use the front suspension and make a towable (around the property) cart. Inside dimension between tires is 21.5 inches so it won't clear the factory onan tray. Need to move wheels forward of tray.

Short idle video. Still amazed at low noise levels.

I ran across some info on using the HEI module a week or so ago. It's about 3/4 of the way down the page. http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/ignition.htm Only for use with a crank triggered full electronic ignition though as far as I can tell though.

I'm about to swap an NH and an NHE to the GM coil(still with points). $24 and change at autozone for the coil earlier this evening. Coil was also used on a couple of hondas and isuzus.

Was checking the oil in the 4.0 KY in my horse trailer yesterday before I exercised it. Poking out from under the VR was what looked like an old paper towel, I spent the next 15 minutes with a welding rod digging a big hand full of mouse nest out from under there. Fortunately the nest material was not from the generator. This is the first time (in 10 years) I have had rodent problems in the trailer.

Damm Mice.

Try a Bouce fabric softener sheet. Wire it in so it can't blow where it can make trouble.

Excercised my 7NHM for an hour a few days ago

I finally achieved victory with the 6.5NH this morning. As it turned out, the points were very heavily oxidized. I had to do a bit of filing to clean them up. After reinstalling them I cranked it and found a healthy spark. It even tried to start on a single cylinder. All that's left now is to find a replacement choke and install the CR1 diode. I haven't checked voltage or frequency yet, but it did run a polisher that I plugged in. Don't want to run it much without replacing the diode and choke, plus I need to redo the exhaust.

Now I'm on to getting a 6.5NHE up and running for dad.

Regarding oxidized/corroded points. I live in Oregon, and most points type equipment stored in un-heated sheds won't winter over without needing a quick cleaning of points. I really like small engines with breakerless ignition systems.

I did discover something that will bring back most point systems that have minor oxidation from humid environments. A dollar bill! Send me one and I'll tell you. Nah, just kidding. The paper bills are printed on seem pretty abrasive, and if the engine is stopped with the points closed, pry them open with your finger nail and slide the dollar bill in. Let the points try to close on the bill, and slide it back and forth a few times. The spring pressure is just enough that this usually cleans the points enough to work.

This won't work on badly corroded points. It won't work if the profile of the points is out of whack with pits and "hills" of metal transfer. But for the light oxidation that occurs in a damp environment, it will get you going.

I love shortcuts. I'll spend an hour to same five minutes.

I had cleaned the points previously, but the oxidation was so heavy that it had no real effect. It wasn't until I removed them from the set that I could see how bad off they really were.
