Photo 1908 IHC 12 hp Gasoline Traction Engine

Attached is a photo of 1908 IHC 12 hp gasoline traction engine serial number 1503, engine number OB195E. We are still trying to track down other survivors of this particular model. Also, through the help of this forum, we have learned that this engine is a numbers matching unit shipped new to Winnipeg just in time for the trials of 1908. We are wondering if anyone has any information on those 1908 trials that may help us determine if a 12 hp was entered by IHC that year and maybe even go so far as to determine the serial number of the unit, if in fact they used a 12 hp at those trials. We know the tractor was bought used from the Winnipeg Branch house in 1912 and shipped to Alberta that year.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Randy

Randy,
Not much for records on Winnipeg 1908 - check your old Cdn Threshermans, etc.? Also, Power For Prairie Plows by MacEwan has a bit on it (pgs 61-63).
IHC had 3 tractors out of 7 in them:
- 15hp 8x14 clyinder.
- 20hp 9x15 cylinder
- there was also a 40hp but the account I have talks about it having 3 cylinders, 7x9? What the hell is that??

There was also:
- Transit Thresher 35hp, 4, 6x8 cylinders.
- Kinnard-Haines 30hp, 4, 6and 1/2x7.
- Marshall Sons & Co 30hp, 2, 6and 1/2x7.
- Universal 20hp, 4, 6x6 cylinders - what is this ?

They all competed in one group. K-H won Gold, IHC 15 won Silver, Marshall won 3rd, followed by IHC 40hp, Transit, IHC 20hp. Universal was withdrawn.

No mention of 12hp but all the companies had big displays at this Fair over the years and they were probably there? No mention of serial #s. Would any University have original Winnipeg data?
Take care,
G.

G.,

I'm pretty sure the "Universal" was a Saunderson Universal Motor (Type A), like the one at the WDM. I checked my literature, and this was listed as a 45/50 bhp tractor with 4cyl of 6in x 6in and three wheels (all driven).

All the best

David

The IH 40 HP 3 cylinder was designed by EA Johnston, essentially an experimental tractor leading into the Mogul 45. There was a Canadian Thresherman article that had some photos of it.

Here is a larger version of the image above.

Does any one out there know of any other 12hp?

Thanks for the larger image!.......

I am aware of a 12hp chassis which, as far as I know, includes an engine.
Whether or not it ever gets BUILT is another story.......

Don't ask how I know, where it is or who has it........'cause I ain't tellin'!
