Default Wisconsin AKN

I have been trying to get the timing right on an AKN with a fairbanks morse magneto. I found that not matter what I do I cannot get the timing right. When I set the mag gear with the cam gear line on mag gear between the two marks on the cam, the timing will be about 10 degrees or so around top dead center. I tried to even set up the gears on the cam and mag wrong and this gets the timing a bit too early, looks like around 10 degrees BTDC which will jerk my arm when trying to start the thing. My only conclusion is the mag has an issue. I even tried to slot out the bolt holes to give me some adjustment but even then I cannot get the timing right with the timing marks right or with them wrong. Is there some internal adjustment on these mags. It seems to be there might be something wrong with the trip mechanism on this mag.

I have an AEN and the mag timing is fine on it.

To check the timing, turn the engine slow in the direction it runs. When the mag impluses, the key way in the crankshaft out put shaft should be just past TDC so it won't kick back. Make sure the mag impluses.

TDC on the crankshaft is when the key way is up on top.

Does the gear that runs the mag. run off the crank or the cam gear? sounds life the timing is not set right. Just a thought! You mite have to get the small mirror out. Good luck;
