Default Onan 30.0 EK - Thoughts on Price

Hey Everyone.

Someone not to far from me is selling a 30.0 EK-15R/7980D
Serial - 0771317455
Its apparently a Gas version, comes with a 100A transfer switch, and has under 200 hours.
I haven't seen it in person yet, but have been told its complete and running when removed. assuming it was a standby genset somewhere that hardly saw any use.

Looking for any info on it, Year, specs, etc.

What are these EKs worth? He is asking $2500 CDN is that to much? I told him id be interested around $1500 if there was no other interested buyers.

Please let me know yours thoughts!!

thanks
brando

I believe it's a 1977 vintage but the "O" at the start of the serial number is throwing me.

15 voltage code: 12 wire broad voltage range, 1 and 3 phase. You would have to look at the ID tag and get voltage rating. Some are derated in single phase. Something like 20KW single phase.

The manuals can be found here:

Hey!

Yes I thought 77 at first too, But its a spec D, and looked through all the manuals its hard to determine exactly what it is.

Hopefully someone can find the build spec on it to say for sure.

Its 30kw 3ph and 20kw 1ph 120/240

thanks for the reply!!

It is worth whatever you think it is, if you buy it. The asking price is roughly $2000 US, a good price in my area if you actually need a set, maybe a bit high if it is just to play with.

If you actually NEED a generator, you are going to see it run and produce power, preferably with a load bank for a hour or so, well before you discuss price. As a buyer of a used item, any used item, you need to see it perform it's intended function prior to purchase. Remember "Trust but Verify".

If you buy for a hobby like I do, a generator that "ran the last time it was used" is worth nowhere near the asking price of $2200. Think scrap price of 10 cents a pound and offer a bit more. If the seller wants more than that, he can put some effort into demonstrating you are getting value for your money.

City water cooling would be a reason for close inspection if I was a potential buyer.

Thanks everyone.

He is willing to take $1500 based on an email conversation. I have not gone to look at it yet. Hoping to get there in the next few days.

Note Wayne 440's comment about city water cooling.

If it is city water cooled or even cooled with shell and tube, I'd let it sit there.
If you wanted to convert it to a radiator (which I'd want to do), you would have a real project on your hands.

I do mostly conversions of marine diesel sets to radiator. It can take a bit of creativity to make something work but it can be done. With a 200hr set I wouldn't be the overly worried about internal corrosion , I would flush it well and call it good. I would be more worried about the condition of the controls and wiring re mouse damage or corrosion to components, relays and such. If the set looks clean and does not have mouse nests inside the control panel or generator end I would say it deserves a closer look. It would have to run and produce power to be worth what you suggest otherwise it could be scrap though. Cheers Dan
