Judy, my XP machines are still upgrading fine. You do not need a new computer. As long as present one has at least 1 GB of ram - 2 preferred, you can upgrade to 7. I really like it - never get blue screen of death.

by the way, it can order new come with win7 installed.

I still using XP pro, set anything classic with fully tweaks.

Windows 8 is too early yet because some of programs wont work, also some drivers not available too. they still not work well for PC/laptop use, works well for tablet, phone only for now.

if me, will use Win7 64bits oem.

I don't remember the date, but I did read something in one of the computer magazines a few months ago about ending the support/upgrades on XP in the near future. Whethers it's still a few months away, or if they moved the date even farther out, I don't know. I'm sure it will still work fine even after that date, it just won't be getting anymore upgrades.

I'm still using XP and happy with it, as I bought it after Vista came out and I avoided all of Those headaches....

Yup, XP is still update able until April 10, 2014. But I'll keep XP for a few years after EOL.

Notice: XP or Win7 or 8, any 32 bits they read only up to 4gb ram.

If want more than 4gb rams, then use any OS with x64.

Macs may be spendy but they are definitely an option worth considering.

When Vista was being pushed as an ill-fated / ill-advised replacement for XP, I said "%%%% that" and realized I had a few extra bucks and got the Mac mini. VERY reasonable price and I was able to use most of my existing peripherals (monitor, keyboard, etc). 5+ years now and I haven't really looked back. It's not as much of an adjustment as you might think.

My $.0002 worth!

had a dead computer this weekend so had to make an emergency purchase of a new windows 8 machine. honestly, I think MS was trying to commit the suicide of windows when they came up with this.

my take (used vista on the old machine and windows 7 on the work machine):
If you don't have an always on internet good non dsl connection, I think you might be in trouble. The interface is ridiculously clumsy and ill conceived even if you are familiar with tablets. Desktop is not only not default, the default is also full of multiple always on internet feeds. A lot the conveniences of earlier windows is hidden and requires a lot of fiddling to bring back a less effective version. mine came with a "quick start" app, that is anything but quick but does at least give something resembling a start button. And there is no shutdown button, i had to configure the power button to shut down the machine (not default). It was not a good weekend, and windows 8 is living down to its rep to me.

I bought a refurb computer last year from a local repair shop.
With XP.
I went to college and have a Electronic Engineering technology associate degree. When I was in college the Apple 2 E was the thing and you WROTE your progams to make the computer do what you needed it to.

I used to try to stay up on the tech but have since learned it is a hamster wheel setup.
Constant change is not for the general good, only the general sales of equipment and software.Period.
98 was the best system for computers that has come out since the onset. It worked.
All else since then has just been complicated and made for young people that can learn fast.
I personaly think touch screen is stupid and troublesome. Call me strange, stupid, whatever, but sometimes it is best to have the option to stay with what works for you.
Dont get me started on these da-- smart phones. I dont need a phone smarter than me.

I have a Mac and run a emulator with windows for all the programs i cannot get to run on the mac. Have not played with win 8.
Runs cad, analysis programs heavy in processing power.
Mac is easy to use doesn't crash, don't have to turn it off if you dont't want to you just shut it (laptop) and open it to use.
Has many shortcuts in the way to navigate around,
Key layout is good, click pad(mouse) takes a little getting used to but once you use it all others seem foreign.
If your keen you can get linux , red hat, suise, debain etc i haven't played with it for a while (red hat)but it was just as good as a windows layout (better i thought) and easy to use.I suspect it would have improved now as well. It didn't crash had programs that where quite technical in settings if you wanted to get technical.I knew people who used to run these as home servers to protect the PC's on a home network.
Seem to have to go out of your way to run it as Pc's ship with an os of some kind, unless you build one from scratch.

I tried to run it on the emulator but it did't like it possibly to alike to the Mac OS or emulator only works with windows i didn't look into it.
For most time i am in the Mac OS but you tend to require windows if you like it or not for certain programs.
Could go for a dual boot or run linux with Windows in an emulator if required.
Windows however sometimes does not update the drivers, i have a laser printer that is fast but i am down to a generic driver for it and it hasn't been updated.
It still works fine so why would you throw it out for a OS upgrade? Throwing hardware for software upgrades is expensive. I wouldn't buy a dell, had a gateway and was very good, had a asus laptop was very good.

Here is a funny cartoon on the subject. (attached)

And one on Internet Privacy has connotations to lord of the rings trillogy in case you didn't know.

to lighten the mood.

Few months ago, I bought LENOVO laptop that has WIN 8 in it. It was a little intimidating at first. I called my 17 year old Grandson & he gave me a couple pointers. Even though there's a few things I need to figure out, it's not as bad as some people say/think. I tell you like my buddy & my Grandson told me: "Don't be afraid of it...just DO IT & start all over if need be until you got it down-pat"

My windows 8 desk top is like the lap tops when it starts up I have all the apps I am catching on to it now. there is a free down load called classic shield that makes it like the windows xp version you got the start button and shows all the computer programs at first I did not use it. got to get my daughter to help me set it up so I can transfer pictures from my camera to the computer. on my email issue I had my provider could not help me with the emails cause they use the pop3 server. I also got a free download called Mozilla thunderbird big blue bird carring an envelope in its wings. it operates on emails with the smap sever so I can get and send my emails now . all well that ends well or something like that. have a nice day folks.

Bear with me until I have time to put the procedure for making Win8 boot directly to the good ol' desktop.......
It involves using Task Scheduler (which I have disabled) and is a pretty easy "fix".......

Exclamation Re: Windows 8 hate!!

OK.......here's how it's done:

Open the 'Task Scheduler' located in the Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Schedule Tasks and select 'Create Task' from the Task Scheduler Library in the left pane.
Name this new task anything you want but 'Boot to Desktop' makes sense and if you find it while nosing around you'll know what it is........

Now open the 'Triggers' tab, choose 'New', select the 'At log on trigger' from the 'Begin the task' drop-down menu at the top of the New Trigger menu and click OK.

Now open the 'Actions' tab, choose 'New' and type explorer into the 'Program/script' field which will tell Windows to boot directly to Windows Explorer (the desktop).

Remember.....if there is a SAVE box at ANY of these steps be SURE to hit SAVE before you move on.
DUN.......

I've been an Apple user since the 80's when the first apple II came out.

We average about ten years on them before we end up upgrading to keep up with new technology changes in software and chipset speed.I'm sitting here tonight typing this on my first generation I mac all in one with wireless keyboard and bluetooth mouse from 1996.

Still have a couple the are close to 20 years old out in the shop that will still work.
Never had a crash or a virus in all those years.

Microsoft is nothing but bloated bug filled software that requires you to buy a new computer every few years to be able to run their latest & greatest garbage with fixes & patches that need to be done everytime you boot up it seems like.
I have to use windoze at work and have nothing but issues even with an expert IT guy to keep them up & running.

Yes I pay a little more for a quality computer that comes loaded with ALL the software needed to make it work right out of the box.

Windoze only wishes it could make an operating system thats easy & intuitive to use without having a degree in computer science.

Default Re: Windows 8 hate!!

Not so simple.

Try updating a Windows x86 laptop compared to a linux based ( mac ) laptop they are about the same, ram yes , hard drive yes everything else no unless its in the model range, Can update the screen on a Mac to a true colour non glare but its a specialised fitment.
X86 will not show true colours on screen.

Desktop computers Windows x 86 pretty generic boards are usually matched to ide or sata outputs for hard drive, ram yes, various hard drives. Raid on hard drives yes, redundant/ mirror. Firewire etc.
Many parts to choose from various bus speeds and overclocking on certain boards via the bios.
Can use prior parts in "new" machine in most cases provided inputs exist on the board can suffer data speed penalty on some devices.sort of like putting 8" wide 19" rims with low profile tyres on a model T i suppose you could do it but what do you gain?
Must match case size to main board!
A Dos boot disk is the tool of choice.
Many brand name computers Gateway , dell, comaq have specialised fitted layouts and aftermarket parts just don't fit the board or case even if the slot is correct. Ram and Hard drive only, CPU if your lucky.

Mac desktop i have never done one, only a peek inside.
Here is a link on what can be upgraded.
http://www.everymac.com/mac-upgrades...de-my-mac.html

Mac usually ship with at time leading edge devices, x86 follow later ( eg mouse was a Mac invention)
At time of order you select what you want from list.

When you do a major upgrade on a PC you throw out the internals and fit a compatible set of parts not just parts that fit/work.( not far from a new one ) If your going for performance, however can get by with some nonperformance parts in certain places.

A major upgrade on a Mac is a new one.

Try Linux on your x86 one of the varieties compare it to Windows, stability ease of use, programs included with os.There will be new names for programs so you will have to get used to that. eg word like program may be called open office, Explorer may be firefox or another name.CD burner Toast.

Try using a Mac for a week compare software, hardware differences ease of use.Again different names for some programs. Shortcuts are different as well.

So if your used to laptops go ahead and try and build one...

Different story with Standalone with catches...

Report back when you have been there done that on your experiences on all btw a 1996 pc x86 is toast long ago.
