Crossley Information Correction
A good friend of mine brought around publications, which contained articles regarding Crossley engines.
On reading it, I was concerned that some of the information written in the article could be misleading. Having unsuccessfully attempted to have misinformation corrected in the past, I decided to post the information on Smokstak so it is in the public domain.
The author begins the article by speaking about his own extensive collection of Crossly engines and referring to a well-known Crossley expert in both engines and company history, thereby giving the article additional credibility. I am sure that this is un-intentional on the author’s part.
Firstly, not all Crossley gas engines from K size onwards have a vertical shaft flyball governor. Indeed K, L and M were fitted with the inertia (pendulum) governor. In addition, I am not aware of any Crossley governors, which vary the amount of gas.
The article also suggests that oil engines were built in greater numbers than gas engines into the early 1900s. In fact between 1892 and 1900, Crossley built approximately 1,500 oil engines and approximately 18,000 gas engines. Of course it is well known that not all engine numbers were used. I welcome more exact information.
Given that the date of these engines significant affects their value it is important that engine numbers and dates are clearly stated. (The novice may believe on reading the article that an additional 16,500 oil engines were built by Crossley during this time frame, which do not exist.)
I guess the best advice is not to always believe what you read.
On the other hand there are a number of authors in our hobby who conduct extensive research into their articles and are a wealth of information, and we are all the wiser for their hard work.
