Question Essex Hot Air Engine

I recently aquired an Essex hot air engine. As this is a new area for me I need educated. Were these engines toys or actually working engines? My engine is in extremely good original condition and runs smooth as silk. It has a 1903 patent date stamped on the top. Hope to hear from other hot air engine owners.
