Default Edison DC Generator (Dynamo)

I have this Edison DC generator with shunt field and would like to know more about it. My dad worked at GE as a foreman in plant maintenance. One day, he sent a crew of guys to clean out a storage room because they needed the space for something else. When he went over to the building to check on the progress, he saw some skids loaded with "junk". On one of the skids was this generator. The guys told him they planned on sending all this stuff over to salvage to scrap it out. My dad flipped out, telling the guys this generator was a piece of history and should not be scrapped. So, they took it over to a training area they had for their apprentice program and used it as a teaching tool. When he retired about 10 years later, it was presented to him at his retirement dinner. It weighs about 90 pounds (lots of brass and copper) and the only markings aside from the plate on the front of the unit is a stamping on the top which reads ".5 KW 120V" and "375" which I suspect is a serial number.

Anyone have any info on this unit? I'd like to learn more and internet searches have yielded very little info.

I would like to know what these were used for. Was it a regular production model, or a model prototype for a larger unit. How old is it? What was used to drive it? Does it have any significant value? Is there any website that can give me more information?

Thanks for reading.

Bill
