Default Bi-polar DC motor/dynamo - old - pre-1900

This old timer has no identification plate or numbers in the castings. It could be a prototype. I wonder if anyone has any idea where this was manufactured. It is presently in a family collection.

Weight: 1400 lbs.
Length: 42”
Width: 20”
Height: 31”

I don't know who built it but it's probably not a prototype. I would guess that it was built in the 1880's.
