Default Magy for 6hp International Horizontal Famous

I have the oppurtinity to purchase a barn fresh 6HP inter famous horizontal but it is missing the mag. How hard are they to find? It is reasonably complete other than that, the carby is broken off, the muffler is broken off and the rocker and mount are broken off but they are there. What is it worth in that sort of condition

well they can have a webster magneto and cast bracket with ignitor, they will be a little hard to find but i suppose if you ask there may be one lurking around.
I think the 4 to 6 hp where the same and larger engines where different but chime in to correct me if i am wrong at which size the change was.
I know of one for a larger engine but not a smaller one.
The contact i know who has smaller engines in famous line has passed away and obviously is out now for helping.

There is another option of a reproduction ignitor and run it off a coil and battery. see rob charles if he does castings and maybe even if he machines one up as well.
He may recast the webster brackets as well, but you will still need a webster mag.
on biz cards smokestak https://www.enginads.com/bizcards.shtml

contact the magneto people as well to see if they have one around if you want to go the magneto route.

There also maybe a person out there who is willing to recast the webster bracket and machine it up you can only ask, post it on the american section in antique engines. see how you go.

I should add you could have had it fitted with a ignitor and
motsinger autosparker as well but still uses battery to start it then switches over to autosparker to run.
They run off the flywheel have their own seperate cast bracket as well.
They are about and occasionally come up on eBay.

just checked eBay there is a cast bracket for a autosparker for sale now .

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BASE-for-MO...QAAOSw44BYWg2N

You still need autosparker itself, correct drive wheel for it and check mounting position for that particular size engine, some bigger engines this bracket mounts vertically so can be the wrong bracket on some applications, they vary.
Some use the one in the bay ad some don't

Got any photos? Engine in that condition is probably worth $500-1000 plus a bit maybe more if the seller has a sentimental attachment to it. I paid $1000 for my 8hp at auction in 2015 and it was very rough ( photo below) but complete.

A JY 1 model Webster is the correct model for a 6 hp, be prepared to pay big $$ if you find one in the US, I’ve also found igniters are like hens teeth I’m still trying to find one for the 8hp to replace the spark plug set up im currently using.

The 4&6 go engines use different brkts. The 6-8-10 use the same brkt. The trip rod and wedge are different between the Webster mag and the plain ign . The plain ign uses a straight rod which is easy to make. Repro wedges are available. Here in the US and engine in that shape would bring probably $1500 -$2000.maybe alittle more.Rob

Is it hopper or tank cooled, throttler or hit n miss, on a transporter? Pictures would be good, you should be able to weld up broken parts, mags are out there but do bring a few dollars.

Grab it quick! That’s good for that price, even as a core to rebuild. New coils are pretty cheap.

the book dates it at 1911. they built 679 of that type engine that year . you have engine number 199 off the production line

i have a list that covers most except the very early ones pm your email and i can email it to you.

Just a reminder to get onto that magneto if you want it or you will miss out on it as its a buy it now ad and can go in one click of the mouse.
organise shipping with the seller too.
I would do all that first before worrying about the date of it, its of secondary importance to making it all complete.
The date range could be 1906 to 1912 approx without looking it up.

You need the bracket with built in ignitor as well hopefully you have that bit to make it complete.

Its up to you to sort it if you want it.

Hi Denby

The engine number says it’s a 6hp tank cooled portable and as Scott says 1911.

The JY mag with the aluminium body would be right for this engine. They are few and far between and not often on the market. They are well made magneto so apart from worn bushes and crook coils there is little else can go wrong. The brass and die cast versions of the JY mag will fit as well.

Depending on condition and without seeing it I would say anywhere between 2-4 K for value for the engine ?( As is depending on actual condition)

The hard to get bits are the magneto, igniter, carb, fuel pump and water pump. Going by engine number this engine would have the piston water pump and screen tank.

Let us know how you get on with it - good luck

cheers Justin
