Default IHC 8hp. Famous and Titan

I know of two 8hp.water hopper cooled IHC engines built around 1913 and 1914. One has a FAMOUS name tag and the other has a TITAN name plate.

Can anyone tell me what make it a Famous or a Titan?
Thanks!

There are raised letters on the water hopper of the Famous and none on the Titan.

Dennis, my hopper cooled 4 hp Famous has the lettering on the hopper. It is throttle governed. My tag says Famous on it I believe.

From what I have read, after April 1914 IHC changed the name of that line of engines from Famous to Titan. As others have said, one easy way to tell if it is a Famous is from the raised lettering on the hopper. Titans didn’t have that. My 4 hp throttler was built in 1913, and has the raised lettering on the hopper and Famous on the tag. My 8 HP throttler was built in 1915, and no raised lettering on the hopper. The original tag is missing off it. There is also another different casting on the igniter trip I have seen on later engines, too.

Here's an 8 HP Titan on the block in a few weeks. I can't see any Embossed International Lettering on the hopper.

Well, no writing cast in the hopper Titan or name cast in the hopper Famous. Simplified but they’re the same engine. I’ll be at that sale with a camera & a bag of cash, SDP. Either way, I’d be happy to own it no matter what ya call it !

The 8hp. Famous and the 8hp. Titan now both reside in my shed.
According to Wendel's notebook, my Famous is a 1912 gasoline engine and my Titan is a 1914 kerosene engine.

Here are 2 pictures taken of the mixer's area. If you need something more specific, just ask and I will take more pictures when I go back to the Titan again.

Brian, they did not start any engines or tractors at the sale. Only this morning, when I unloaded the TITAN did I realize it was throttled governed. More than likely fewer throttlers than hit and miss engines, I don't know.

Denis,
According to the serial list I have, IHC made 668 8 HP Hopper Cooled Famous farm engines (AD prefix) versus 332 8 HP Hopper Cooled Titan farm engines (AP prefix). 'Farm Engines' being mounted on skids with a battery box that a farmer would pull around with horses.

Paul, is the serial list you have from Wendel's Notebook? Or is it from another source? Your answer seems to imply that all AD prefix engines were FAMOUS engines and all AP prefix were all TITAN engines.

Denis,
The list I use was published in the May 1985 issue of Gas Engine Magazine. The associated article states that it came from the customer relations department at IHC, obtained by a collector from New York who shared it with the magazine.
There is no reference to 'Famous' or Titan in this list, it only shows gasoline or kerosene as to how the engine types are fueled which would indicate hit and miss versus kerosene as to how the engines are governed. I've always found the serial number prefixes to line up with the engine types I'm investigating, so I think it's a pretty good list.

Here's some more details of the AD & AP serial number lists.

I've also added my 4 HP Famous H/M which is listed as an Tank Cooled base but has a Titan Hopper mounted to it. At some point in history, two engines became one....

The serial number is stamped on the hopper, on the head and on the brass name plate. At least this is the case with my two 8hp IHC engines.

Did you check all 3 places on your 4hp. to determine they were from different engines?

Took a bit of paint and gasket scraping but there it is. Head is from a Tank Cooled 1914 and the Hopper is 1916 both Kerosene. Base is Tank cooled 1914 Gasoline.
