Default Onan Transfer Switch Wire Wiring Info

I have an Onan 20DGAB gen set connected to a manual transfer switch. I have access an Onan LTCU 60L 87H auto transfer switch cheap but not sure if it will work and wire up to my genset as it says 480VMAX 4 wires. Picture below of the transfer switch panel. Can I use this transfer switch for my 20DGAB? Any help is appreciated.

Switch can be reconfigured for different voltages, so OK there.

Switch is only 60 amps, your generator is good for 83. Only proper way you could use that switch would be to build an emergency circuit panel that is 60 amps, feed it with a 60 amp breaker from your main panel, and downgrade your generator with a 60 amp breaker. ATS could then only feed that 60 amp sub-panel.

ps.....these particular transfer switches loved to eat the time delay relays too, which can get expensive to replace. They are standard base relays, so any suitable third party timer does work.

Eric beat me to it. Voltage can be changed. But it does love to eat relays and transformers. Not a switch I would care to depend on.

Eric & Billy, thanks for the info. The reason I'm looking at this switch is I can get it for about $100. Is this a fair price? My load for this transfer switch is less than 50 amps so would this work?

There is another switch a OTBCD70-5DU/3403E for $125 which is 70 amps but 3 phase. Can this be wired for my gen set and is that a fair price? Is this a better switch for me generator?

Nito,

Either one would work, if you follow what I stated in the other post with regards to having a properly sized, protected, and separate emergency circuit breaker panel installed that is powered by the ATS.

Also, bear in mind, the second photo you posted is of an OT II switch. They too, are also getting harder to obtain parts for, and some of the controls components are listed as obsolete.

ps..... I correct statement about the OT II. It "could" work, if parts were available for conversion. On the control/sensing side of things, the OT II's used a certain amount of component replacement parts when converting, unlike the later models that mainly needed wiring re-configured.

I'd want to stay away from an OT II. Getting expensive to repair the electronics. They will fail. Its not if, its when. The actual switch is pretty straight up and reliable, just the electronics.

If you are up to it, there are companies that make an after market controller that replaces the entire control panel on the door, much more reliable and way cheaper than a repair.
