Default 125.0 DYD electronic governor retrofit

Well I am finally getting back to finsihing my electronic governor upgrade project, I just had the injection pump rebuilt and had the rebuild shop install the GAC ADC-100-24 electronic governor actuator (the actuator replaces the top cover and solenoid of the Stanadyne D series pump). If the weather holds out I have a diesel mechanic coming over tomorrow afternoon to reinstall the injection pump, then it is just a matter of fine tuning the governor controller (GAC ESD-2110 which I installed several months ago). Switched power for the governor/controller is supplied by a relay connected B26.

My questions are:

1, Does B-26 loose power when a fault condition occurs? (spring return on actuator doubles as a pump kill switch on loss of power)

2, Should I turn off the exciter breaker while I adjust speed controller until I get it close to 60 hz? Or is it safe to have the exctier breaker on while generator is running at low rpms? I don't have a tachometer on this generator, only a frequency meter.

thanks Ike

p.s. the mechanic showed up a day early, but did not get to finish due to an afternoon thunderstorm, so he will hopefully be back Tuesday afternoon.

B-26 will lose power under a fault. You will need the breaker on to set the gov. No voltage ,no freq meter. Try to get the speed as close as you can to 1800 then turn on the field breaker. Low RPMs will not hurt anything because the regulator will turn itself off.

Well no luck yet (hopefully the rain will head your way Billy), we had about 30 minutes worth of rain that slowed the injection pump installation. After the guy got it on the engine was still not running right, coughing and sputtering, etc. He thought it might be one tooth out of time, so pulled the pump turned the gear and reinstalled, then it would not even fire off at all. He is now suspecting the injection shop having done something wrong, but we ran out of daylight, so it is wait to see what tomorrow brings, at least there are no hurricanes on the way.

Just had to share, this problem is getting annoying, after the mechanic spending about 8 hours checking everything, unmounting and remounting multiple times, the injection pump is back at the rebuild shop. It turns out the engine was getting over fuelled and there was no flow from the return fitting out of the injection pump. I am not sure what they did wrong, but I took them a working pump and about $650 later (they did comment on being surprised it was running based on the look of the insides, the price was high because they had to replace a couple of non standard rebuild parts) and got back a non working one. This just has not been my week/month for things mechanical, to think I called around and asked advice on which diesel injection shop to use, and this still happens.

Ike

p.s. for future reference, it appears that the Allis Chalmers 685T has no timing marks on the gear wheel or flywheel.

I bet you won't take off another "working" pump without thinking a long time about it. You appear to be taking this better than I would. Here it would be time for a discussion about a substantial portion of that $650 going the other way.

The discussion would have been longer, but I was in a rush to get to a dentist appointment for a root canal and in the end the pump did need rebuilding even if it was running, I just wish it was still running when it came back.

Oww. A root canal and generator trouble combined. At least it is an Onan.

Yeah, an Onan getting its injection pump rebuilt at a whopping 599.4 hours on the engine (or 30 years and 2 months of age on the rubber seals), depending on the way you look at it. At least there are good pain killers for one of these problems, now back to the mashed potatoes for dinner.

If you need a good pump shop. I have one over here. They have a good repair price and the pump does not leave the shop until it has past all their test. Never had any problems with their work.

Yeah, I know, we have/had a good one about 50 miles east of here, unfortunately the guy that runs it has decided to close up shop and retire next month. So I sent this pump to another shop about 60 miles south of here that I had heard a handful of good things about, I thought since they have been in business for about 12 years and have 2 locations they could not be doing everything wrong.

IT LIVES

Just had to share that one with everyone, Almost 6 weeks and 2 mechanics later (the first spent close to 20 hours on it before giving up and not charging anything because he could not fix it, the second guy spent 5 hours on it before getitng running right (he only had to remove and replace the pump twice, along with the flywheel timing cover, valve covers, etc.).

If you see him again, shake his hand for me. There are not many left who have the pride and integrity to do that.

How does the governor work?

Will do. The electronic governor seems good so far, I still need to fine tune things, but it is holding fairly steady at 59.9 - 60.0 HZ, the injection shop had messed up the setting on the mechanical governor arm (causing the electronic governor to max out at 54 HZ) they had wired it down, so I had to cut that and readjust, which lead me to find out the only correct sized flat head screw driver here was broken (spins in the handle), and the 5/16 box wrench is the only wrench missing out of the tool box ....So now I am back from the dollar store with a $9 screw driver set (no sense in buying good ones because someone around here will break them), now if nothing else happens I will get back to fine tuning the stability settings, etc., but first I am enjoying a Coca-Cola Classic
