I remember new farm equipment coming with square hardware at least into the `1950's. As several have said, engines and technical assemblies were almost always hex.

Square nuts and bolts are still used today! Not as common as hex, but you still can buy them at the home despot. probably made in china too My hardware store in Rockaway still has some old ones, still in the boxes from the turn of the 20th century. All kinds of good stuff in the basement of that old store!
