Default the holliday season is comming

I am re-posting a simple cure for those balky HO [etc] trains.

smoothest operating [try it]
the attached power supply can be made from a handful of junk box parts.
NO IR LAG OR OVER-SPEED

you raise the speed control and the voltage goes up proportionately.
[up to the current capacity of the components, fuse should be weakest]
there is minimal current effect on the applied voltage.

the stout active device should have a heat-sink
you can substitute an old printer wall-wart for the xf/rectifier end
