Default Minneapolis 40-80 Complete Frame Off Restoration

I got a Big Minnie into the shop a while back to get in running order. The more we dug the more things we found that needed help. The owner has decided to go ALL the way with a Frame off or Frame up Restoration! He wants to share the restoration process here on Lugs And Cleats so everyone can see the process of making one of these BIG girls look and run good! This is the biggest one I have ever had in my shop so is will be a challenge! I will be putting pictures and progress reports as we go along. This is going to be a BIG project! Wendell Kelch

If your past restorations are any indicator, I'll be looking forward to seeing it finished next summer if not before.

Looking forward to the pictures and progress updates.

I believe I recognize that ole girl. Wish I were as young as when I first seen it in Harold Ottaway's building. Harold had quite a story on that tractor when it was hauled to Wichita. The trucker claimed he had it going 85 miles per hour on the hiway!

Now correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure this is the same tractor.

Yes this was Harolds Minnie. She is a tired girl and needs a LOT of love! Here are a few pics of some of the teardown. The crankshaft is 8Ft long! The stock bore is 7.250 but sometime it has been bored .070 over and now it needs to be resized again . There is a lot of slop between the pistons and cylinders.

Does your shop suddenly seem a lot smaller with that big 'ol girl in there??

This looks to be another great thread! Looking forward to progress pics.

Am I wrong in thinking that this was the one Andrew Yeary was working on when he deployed?

Yes Im pretty sure it's the same one. I distinctly remember the grey primer on the tractor when he had it advertised a while back. I figured he had already done some substantial work on the tractor. I guess not?

We been tearing the Minnie on down. We have found a few more issues with it . Sometime in its life it took a hard hit on the front axle. It has broke the casting on the front axle and bent a few parts that the front end end connects to the frame. It is going to take a bunch of heating and beating to get it back straight. There are some broken castings that will be needed to be repaired also. All the bearings in the transmission, differential, and rear axle have not seen oil or grease in a long time and are dry, rusty,& loose. The back wheels and fenders are Huge when you get them off the tractor!

We are getting the Minnie about to the bottom of the teardown. We found a few more issues with it .When we pulled the left rear wheel off we found that the nose on the hub that supports the bull gear was broken. Unless someone has a spare left wheel (we have a spare right one) We are going to have to repair this one. The crud is deep and hard on everything!

The front end has took a nasty hit sometime in its life! The front bolster is cracked, the support from the bolster to frame is bent and the crossmember on the frame is bent also. We drilled the rivets out and pulled the crossmember out of the frame to repair it.

The frame is stripped! We got it tore down in smaller pieces now and it is a lot easier to handle! There has been a bunch of scraping to find metal under the crud! With the crossmember out of the frame we can make it like it has never been crashed!

Here is an old post card view of a big Minny with wing feeder threshing machine taken near Rosetown, Saskatchewan. A fine looking crew.

We got the first piece repaired on the Minnie! we got the cross member riveted to the frame today. We got the front end brace straightened and repaired also. We hope to be blasting the frame soon and getting it painted so we can start bolting parts on it Wendell Kelch

Most likely the frame and wheel damage resulted from the same event. It always impresses me how much damage and or wear these old things can accumulate and still perform. F.J.W.
