Default 1/2 scale Sorg engine

about 12 years ago, i saw some old pics of a Sorg engine in the back of a pickup in Wisconsin.
since then the whereabouts of this engine is a mystery.

the interesting design of the Sorg is that the piston is stationary
and the cylinder moves guided in a crosshead layout.
the pics had a 1" paint brush on the base.by scaling those pics
and an article in the May 1912 Cosmopolitan magazine, i started drawing
and had 2 frame castings made.
the head, cylinder, crosshead, connecting rod, etc are machined from solids.

the model sat for about 10 years and after some encouragement, (yes, they were bugging me )
this fall i got back working on it. not running yet but getting closer.

i'll start with a couple of the pics and the Cosmopolitan ad.

this is how it sits now. the cooling system pumps the water into the bottom of head,
thru the piston, back thru the head and out.
the mixer is based on a Wyvern model engine design.

Marv, if it wasn't for all the other stuff I know you got done in the meantime, I would think you work down at my speed.

Great job Mary! I have seen a lot of things done to skirt patent limitations, but that engine takes it to the limit for sure! I wonder how many were actually produced, and if they were successful? keep us advised as for your progress!

This is great! I remember you displaying a mock-up or prototype of this at the NAMES show many many years ago. I was hoping it would resurface once again!

Best of luck and I'm looking forward to following your posts on this.

Karl
