Default Monarch 10EE on eBay

Would this be a long shot project?

There's no way to tell really. I'd be leery of a eBay seller with 98.3% feedback. But, if you can afford the gamble, the 10EE is a great machine...

Motor drives on those can be pretty complicated. That one is likely to have three giant vacuum tubes as part of the motor control - yes, you heard me right - vacuum tubes. And the actual motor current goes through them. And there is a HUGE rats nest of control wiring that goes along with them. The earlier Ward Leonard motor generator drives were less complicated but still not simple. One common fix is to replace the original motor and drive with a VFD.

A bigger issue is the condition of the lathe itself. Some are pristine and others are well worn. You cannot tell unless you examine the machine. A pristine 10EE is a joy to work with but a worn out one is just another clapped-out lathe.

It would probably be best if you could convert it to a VFD. These are precision lathes but the through hole is small compared to modern lathes, it's a big foot print for the work size. If you need the precision it can't be beat, for all around hobby work you may be happier with something else.

Sold for $2025, I was the first bid and was outbid in the last few seconds, no biggie.

You might even be lucky. Anyone who piles chucks and faceplates on the ways of a 10EE is not likely the kind who took care of it.

PS; you ARE lucky. A closer look reveals that everything bare has been wirewheeled or scotchbrited severely. Everything in the pic is on pallets. Fly by night dealer.
