Ian,good find unusual voltage range, may have been some specialist equipment. If the dynamo has 4 brushes it will probably be a starter generator,(2 to start 2 to charge). The ones like this I have seen normally were 32 volt,be very careful if you get this one running and charging as that voltage and amps would ruin your day if it bit you, keep cranking,Norm

Hi Ian,
You probably already know this;
Your engine was built around 1928.
The Spec A56 indicates twin flywheel, tank cooled and no suction carburettor. The "E"= Electric (lighting plant/generating set)
The Flywheels should be 22 1/2inches x 2 3/4 inches.
The sub base should accomodate the fuel tank.
A344 or A345 should be cast into the base "somewhere".
Sub bases with internal fuel tanks were generally supplied with engines exported to Aust & N.Z. for use with sheep shearing equipment.
From Spec 12 batches of A & B types were being built for 'Austalian type' engines.
Batches of several hundred 'Australian type' engines were supplied to this and later specs, but due to a lack of information it is impossible to determine many differences between these and the standard production engine.
The sub base depth was increased in order to accommodate the larger 'E' flywheels.

Is the 'box' sitting on the dynamo, the switchboard?
What are the numbers on the i.d. plate (bottom photo)?
Would it be possible to take photos of the "other side" and dynamo

Hope this is of benefit.
Best wishes, jayvee

Hi Lanz & Ian
I am unsure of what switchboard looks like, but on closer examination of the first/top picture, the box sitting on top of the dynamo is in fact a radiator which is belt driven from between the flywheel & dynamo. A hose can be seen coming to/from the engine head to the radiator top.
The switchbox (to the right of radiator) is missing. Its mounting posts with chrome dome nuts can be seen.
It will be interesting to see other pictures of unit.

Best wishes, jayvee

Those chrome nuts are actually just for a cover for the terminal block. The switch board would have been on the wall or mounted on two posts screwed into the base. I will take a pic of my one over the weekend for you showing how it mounts.

Hi Lanz,
No dramas. Switchbox/Terminal block, could be one & the same. I have not seen these units for a long time and I'm unable to find my pictures of same.
Look forward to seeing your pictures.

Best wishes, jayvee

Hi Lanzb,
Thanks for the pics.
Is your engine/unit around the 1924 era?
I am more aware of Ian's style than yours. Certainly has my attention.
Looks like more reading & research.

Best wishes, jayvee

Hi,

I have determined that I have the same dynamo as the one you have pictured here. Please look here - http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showpo...60&postcount=6

If you can give me more info on this dynamo/generator I will really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Basically anything that you might have on this. A quick of the top of my head:

Terminal connections for charging and starting.
What regulators are required and how to connect them.
What size (kW) Lister engine is required.

Thanks!

The red wire is Pos out, the black wire is Neg out, and the green wire is the Pos field back in. There is a rheostat between the red and green wire to adjust the field voltage.

Here's what it looked like when new. A 1927 advertisement.
