Hiller Yard Hand Garden Tractor

Speaking with a mechanic from California who built the Hiller in '54, he personally never used anything but a Power Products 1.66 h.p. one cylinder engine and two speed belt drive. Not saying it wasn't a special build for a company at some point. I contacted Tecumseh, who was originally POwer Products, and their research department told me they supplied all the engines for Hiller. But since Tecumseh went out of business in '09, there's no way to check again. I'm continuing the try and get answers for myself, along with anyone else interested in Hiller history. Both manuals I have on the tractor show the typical setup I have on mine, I see no other setups. It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle.................

Did your friend who put these together in 54 work for the company long? did he work there to the end in 56?
My serial number tag reads 13499. Could it just be how the company would have built them in 57 had they kept going?

seems my serial number is quite high could it have been one of the last?

that is the new style it gave it more power with the larger engine and the hood was so it could be accessed easier was that an origional mower for it

I own two hillers. One with the mower and the other with a table saw attachment. I have documentation on both and orginal owners manuals also. There were hillers that could have a briggs engine instead of the power products engine. I have the documentation from hiller on how to convert to a Briggs wmb engine including the photographs and instructions from Hiller. I also have an orginal conversion set upfor a briggs but missing the chain and sprocket to it. If interested in knowing more about these little tractors email me at

The "white paint" is the primer. I have a Porter Cable garden tractor that was originally painted maroon but was mostly white when i got it because the original paint did not stick to the primer and peeled and faded off.

The Hiller tractors sheet metal was painted red and the Craftsman in yellow.

I acquired a Craftsman version of the Yard Hand. It appears to be made just like the Hiller, except it has the name "Craftsman" on the front grill. It is missing the engine, but appears to be otherwise complete. Not sure of the original color. Is it worth the effort to chase down a correct engine and do the restoration work?

I have a holler yard hand which has been in my possession since I was little. I’m 33! I’m looking for more information on it because it seems the majority of the holler yard hands I’m seeing do not look like mine. Any advise or input would be greatly appreciated.

I had a rough 1 for a short time,I wish i had kept it.But there was a conversion kit avalaible to put a small Briggs on them in place of the 2 cycle they came with.
Mine had alot of issues that for me to fix then would have been difficult but had I got it now,it would be fixed in short order. Sometimes you just sell stuff you should have kept.

Yea this has a Briggs 2 stoke motor. I used to ride it around my farm all the time as a child. Looking to fix it up and let my children ride it around. Need to find new tire and a new belt. All new fluids and a thorough cleaning. It’s been stored well.
