Default Twin City Big Twin Cam up for Sale

A late 20-35 or early 27-44 on a auction in Bisbee ND on Oct. 13th. If you feel that your tractor collection isn't quite complete without one here is your opportunity!
Since it's only a couple hours away I may make the trip to see what it brings and if there happens to be any extra TC stuff laying around.

http://www.globalauctionguide.com/no...-s-350885.html

And here I went all the way to Edmonton AB for one!

The pictures of the tractor are rather cluttered. Scroll to the bottom of the auction listing and click "View All Photos". It can be seen on pictures# 74, 89, 90, and 134.

As there isn't a lot of traffic in this forum I'm giving this one last bump. For those heading to the auction from the south on Hwy 281 there is a roundabout under construction in Carrington at the junction of Hwy 200.

This model Twin City is a stout one to haul. Weight is in the 9000# to 9500# range. The width on this one with the stock 20" wheels is 88". I hauled mine in from Edmonton AB on a tilt bed car trailer equipped with 2 - 7000# axles which would be an absolute minimum. I found to balance the load the tractor had to be put on backwards which had its challenges as it was too wide to go between the fenders. If you go with this same kind of trailer be sure the tires are in good shape as they will squat.

Made it up to the Bisbee auction. The Twin City was an early 27-44 with a unit #250146 which I think was the subject of another recent thread. It was a very complete original equipped with the AE354 hotspot manifold. It had sat outside for an extended period of time. The lower radiator pipe was rotted off and mice had filled the radiator tank 2/3's full of beans and I'll bet the block is full as well. The later vents on the AE44B valve covers have the tendency to allow water on the inside. Also the exhaust was open and there could have been mouse traffic inside there as that was a problem in the one I bought as well.

The tractor sold for $7000.00

Mark, I had a moment of weakness. Hope my addiction didn't fetch me a lemon. It I'll be right at home with #116 and #492.

Adam... Congrats on your new purchase. The price was reasonable enough for what was there. The backlash on the primary bevel gear set felt good so you should be OK there. The frozen shift rails and clutch are kind of standard fare on these tractors if they sat outside for any length of time. Hopefully you won't be dealing with the constricted cylinder sleeve issue that I am on mine. Other than the mice in the motor the only other negative I spotted was that rather ragged V pulley mounting on the fan drive. The drive wheels, lugs, and fenders are in nice shape.

A few photos of the AE354 manifold set up. The heater bypass on mine was AE354B and the air cleaner and carb connections are different than this one.

Had to work so I sent dad after it. Hate not being able to inspect but I set my safe limit and I yet to see her in person. From what I was told the tractor was bought new for that farm and has always been there. She is identical to 116 except road wheels. I plan on keeping the history alive as I do with the other 2 twin cams. Will dig in upon arrival to inspect and plan.

Since you know your way around a big Twin Cam you won't be disappointed. I spent some time talking with your dad (didn't know it at the time) and was pleased to make his acquaintance. If I understood him correctly you have an Aunt and Uncle that live in my hometown in MN.

Let us know what you find out when you get it home.

Will do! Yeah he was trying to explain things to me via text. Not easy and play poker face as well. Pics seem good. I guess I can maybe get copy's of pics of that TC plowing years back. My neighbor in Bemidji sent his friend out to bid on it and that's who ran me up to 7 k. Lol oh well.

She arrived this morning and I immediately went into access mode. Overall the tractor condition pleased me. Then I got out the tools and lube. 30 minutes roughly to loosen clutch and shifter and oil and grease them. Water pump also was loose just stiff. Pulled valve covers off and saw that Mickey and Minnie once upon a time lived there. Poked and prodded nest...my luck vacancy! Took air hose and blew all there work to the wind. Lubed up stems and hardware that to my surprise wasn't very rusty but actually looked very nice. Almost new. Surprisingly so! 16 valves were loose. Plugs when pulled had a little carbon but no rust. 1,2,4 cylinders looked good but 3 had surface rust in it and below piston. Bearings looked and feel tight. So all and all I think there's potential. 116 was definitely much much worse. That had rust barnacles on plugs and 1 valve was loose. Rest rock hard! Now to let her soak 4 winter.

Sounds good so far. I'm trying to think of a potential mouse route under the valve covers and am coming up short. Obviously the mice didn't.
On my 20-35 the mice got in the exhaust manifold and set up camp in those generous exhaust ports. Their urine ran into one cylinder and stuck it and also did a number on the valve heads. You might want to drop the exhaust manifold and take a look. I saw at the auction that the previous owner had already started to remove it.

If you look at the 4th picture in post number 6 you can see the oil filter screen laying on the front of the engine block. Without the screen in the oil pan the mice have a doorway into the crankcase and up to the valve covers.

True Jim except that there's 1 in it. That was a spare. My only thought is that the daughter told dad that the tractor sat in the old barn. Then when they tore the barn down it was moved to the shop there. Kinda wondering if it didn't sit partially apart in barn then was worked on and stuck together by someone else who failed to see the new inhabitants. Maybe putting in new screen and adding oil. Kinda been a brain teaser for me today. Has the later heads on it and they seem nice. 203 F

Tinkered with it again today. Dumped PB blaster down the cylinders. After an hour 1,4 were raining down and 2,3 show wetness and drips. Good sign.. or a tease! Wait and see. May toss in shop for a week to do a further tear down and free up. Maybe!

Had an itch. So I tore the heads off to see just how bad it may be. After the rocker assembly's came off i saw that #3 cylinder had a rather high valve... ?odd! Well when the head came off it all started to make sense. 3 at sum point dropped a valve head and exposed cylinder that had now just received a new punched doorway into the crankcase via piston top. So I am now in need off a few valves and a piston. Oh well! That's how Mickey and Minnie got into valve covers. Couple taps with a hammer and a bar engine was turning over freely. Then I evicted the nest out of the block and upper radiator. Good lube of everything including bearings and a quick hone she now rolls right over. 12 of the 16 valves appear nice....but we will see.

Adam...how much cylinder head carnage did the bouncing valve head cause? Probably needs a seat put in? Glad to hear that the engine turns over again!

Some pictographs would be good....remember misery loves company!

Never posted pics on here not sure how. Yes carnage it did. First clue was broken valve guide piece upon dismantle in intake. Then the valve stem sticking way up after rocker arm tear down. Seat shot...and 1bent valve along with 2 others beat up. May just replace the 4 valves. Rest look very good but may order 2 extras in case pee got to sum. Found a nos piston maybe if part number lines up. Going to get heads done over winter and all the smalls so that in spring I may tackle in just a few days. Ha ha probably wishful thinking. Kinda got side tracked from 250116 with a new toy in the stable. Evicted mice nest from radiator and block. Darn mess.

---------- Post added at 09:14:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:11:15 PM ----------

Kinda would like to find exhaust elbow. I actually need 3. But 2 for sure.

Yep...I hear you with the picture thing. It took me a fair amount of time under the constant direction of my kids before I could finally post photos on here unassisted. If someone messes with the camera settings I'm still at their mercy to get it back on track.

I'm getting pretty good at putting seats in my heads. I finished putting 8 seats in the 1st head and just got it back today after Henry resurfaced it. I still need to load the valves in it. It seems that Henry at H&J Machine loaned me an old KO Lee hand powered seat cutter (never seen one before) and showed me how to use it. He did one and then told me the rest is yours...get after it!
I am installing late JD A exhaust seats which is a pretty close fit. I'll post an update on the other channel some evening.

Did the head come off an intake valve?

When you mention exhaust elbow do you mean the elbow above the heater bypass or the short turnout that is below it?

Below it. A friend is going to help me with the seat though I would like to learn how. Have to get Henry intake up some valves and couple guides. Exhaust valve gave out.
