Some pics would help. Make sure table is unlocked, if unlocked, loosen gib and try again. Never heard of No.40, you sure that is not CAT 40 or NMTB 40?

Operators,
Maint,
Electrical Diagrams,

German Text, but I have found it not too hard to understand for a few other machines---:

as I don't really know much about tooling I can't say

all are stamped with "40" and some are from different manufacturers

one number I have "40FC-E75" there are about 20 chucks from fractional to 1 inch diameter

thanks for the response

Looks like a pretty stout machine. Did you get the table moving yet? If loosening gibs does not help you might try removing gib screws and use a thin rod to tap small end of gib to get it loose. Cannot see enough of that tool holder to tell what it is, how about a few more pics showing the whole piece from a few different angles. And see if you can get your pics larger.

thanks for the questions and advice dal-61

long story short - unfortunately I have limited time in that shop to work on the mill as I am doing some engine work (reassembly of a 6mz waukesha engine next priority - see rumely 6 restoration thread) and my overall time here is also limited

when I can I plan to spend a day or two specifically on that machine first removing all the pile of chips and give it generally a cleanup than start loosening / disassembly

the good news the power vertical all seems to work (mostly) including the various speed settings for the spindle although the flat belt wants to jump off at high speed

more photos at that time after cleanup

Maybe too simple a thought, but---
is it possible that the machine was just shut down with the power feeds engaged?

as I did not know for sure what the "gib screws" were -I found the following useful and instructive

try knowledge.axminister.co.uk and look at the "How To" tab - How to Set up and Adjust Your Mill. I think that is what you are suggesting Dal-61?

Kind of, it depends on what type of gibs your machine has. My guess would be that you have tapered gibs (not what is shown on that site), watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Mmnar89XKA

The fact your table moved, then got stuck, leads me to believe your tapered gibs have bound the table, but I could be wrong.
