Default Unknown small engine help?

I have had this small water cooled engine for a while and would like to see if anyone can identify it. It stands about 14" tall with a 7 1/4" flywheel. It has a two piece crank case like a bike engine that is about 3 1/2" wide. Schebler carb and a Berling AOS mag. The same mag a Smith Motor Wheel used. Being water cooled I ruled out a bike engine. Possibly a small cycle car engine? Your thoughts.

What you have is a very rare early water-cooled Gravely model D garden tractor engine.

I think they were produced around 1925 or so.

Do you know if Gravely built the engine, or was it built by someone else and used on the tractor?

Hi Emil,

I am not getting a spark from the mag. I checked the magnetism in the magnet and it has none. When I got the engine it was setup on a cart with a cooling tank. I know it had run in the past by the previous owner.

But to answer your question, no I have never ran it.

Good to hear from you again.

Mike

As far as I know, Gravely built the engine. I believe I read once that the first prototype tractor that Benjamin Gravely built used an Indian motorcycle engine and that's why the Gravely engines have such a resemblence to a motorcycle engine with the flywheels inside the crankcase.

Now I am really confused as my engine has an external flywheel.

I googled Gravely model "D" and was reading some threads. They were talking about the serial numbers on the side of the block. I took the fuel tank and bracket off of mine and revealed the embossment where the serial number is supposed to be and mine is blank. i am wondering if all these engines were used on walk behind tractors.
