One of the things I'm working on at the present. I grooved steel and brazed the groove full before I machined this one piece. Then I flame blued it. I used 10-30 to quench it. I'm happy with how it turned out. It will run over 7:00.

Just found this one on eBay today so someone's already beat you to to the punch with the "Damascus". (from another thread).

Your "Timascus" (from the other thread) would obviously be more brightly colored, but also a lot more expensive.

I'm 'Guessing' by the pattern in it that they cut a disc out of flat stock instead of using the round bar round.

I wonder how cheap a person might be able to pick up an old broken or damaged knife blade to cut some discs out of.

Might be a cheaper way of get the material anyway.

Everybody is getting fancy and I still make junk that wobbles and falls over....
But I'll get there hopefully before I fill a 55 gallon barrel with chips.

Does using a rough surface like a formica tabletop hurt their running? That's what I've been using. Wifey is shopping tonight and will pickup a concave mirror if she sees one.

I've had quite a run of 8-9-10 min tops lately. Just sent a 10 min plus to Germany. Made one out of copper and titanium, never machined either before. 9:21 first spin. Even had one stop spinning and just stood there still. I've got a video to prove it.

Now that's stability. Every one I whittle up is an unstable wiggling piece of junk. !
I still have to get a concave mirror. All I've tested on is a formica counter.

That has to be it... Reed is cheating. He superglued that one to the mirror just for the pics.

Or it could be you are spinning a hole in your base with all that time spinning in one place.
I looked at it the first time, no flat bottom. Its a 1/4" ball bearing, pretty round. This is not the same mirror either. The last time I spent several minutes trying to ballance it not spinning, never got it to stand up.

Yes, the cosmic force involved is called luck. You will see most any method you can think of already being tried by someone. My next tops will be made of Damascus steel on a titanium stem. I'm going to try to hollow the stem too. I'm going to do the brass inlay on the outside edge too.

Here's one I just sold. It went to NewYork. It has a hollow stem and spun 9:40 on the first try. The Damascus one will be similar in shape.

A top I built today went 14:01. I didn't think I'd ever see that.

Helps if you don't use a live center. Some people also bore the bearing hole instead of drill using the steady rest. My center lines up well. I took a long piece and put a center in it and made a cut then mic'd it at both ends and moved the steady rest .0015 till it made a cut the same the entire length of the piece. I can center drill and then use a drill bit for my bearing. But lately I've been making the top just out in the air, no live center.
