My latest, 1" OD stainless Damascus with my brass inlay on a hollow flamed titanium stem, spins 9 min.

Absolutely beautiful. And I love the temperature control on the colouring on the top end. How many hours do you have in this one.. 15?

and I keep on whittling out tops that are as stable as dynamite that has gone crystalline.

One like that is just over two. Three if I fool around. Run as fast as you can high rpm is your friend. Boring Ti though you better slow down, gets hot.

I wish I could help you find the problem. Do you have run out n the chuck? My machin is acurate but I can't take on out and then re chuck it. It's a one shot only thing. Are you doing that?

Guess I could just randomly grind patterns etc then fill with brass. Thanks for the suggestion.

this was yesterday's shipment going out

The gears? FM 208 crank pinions that had been replaced. This is why you never throw away anything.

Sorry for the slow response.
I make the whole top with one chucking to retain concentricity. Last operation is to part it off at the spinning end.
It's my design geometry that's the problem.

The secret for getting all the smoothness possible. Bore the bearing hole instead of drilling using the tail stock. Because the tail stock is loose enough to slide on the ways that also means it can be off center oh so much. Boring gets the center as close as possible to the OD. On these it make a difference.

Home made boring bar from a piece of key stock and used .125 tool steel.

Very nice. Especially compared to the wobbling junk I've turned out.

Found a little velvet bag in a traded in car today and opened it up to see what it was. Inside I found a piece of octagon brass turned down to a ball on one end and stem on the other to make a top. Each side had letters and inside was a game instruction sheet for "Ante up" , which made me think of this thread.

Fixed. I got two in a roll that would do that. If you don't care to watch it all FF out to about 5 min.

Wish we lived closer, I'd help you get it figured out. If it's any consolation I do make a wobbler once in a while. Most are stable and a few are very.

One of my latest, stainless steel basketweave Damascus on a hollow Titanium stem. Got almost a 12 min spin out of it. These sell well. As a matter of fact, this sold last night. I'll put a tungsten carbide bearing in as that's the customers preferance.

Yes. I had it in the etch for like two hours yesterday and not much was happening. I called the guys who make the Damascus and ask for suggestions. The guy ask what the temp was, I told him 40 and I do it outside. He told me to put my small bowl of acid in a larger bowl and then microwave water till it boils and pour in around the small bowl to warm things up. Before you could see bubbles forming on the Damascus but after warming things up the acid was rolling. I got more etch in 15 min than I had on the previous 2 hours.

Yeah, those look cool but don't spin all that good. There are currently 100 or so builders that I'm aware of. I've seen tops go from $20.00 up to $3000.00 (no joke), don't know who buys them but some fetch prices that amaze me. The most I've gotten was $230.00.

The "big names" are Rich Stadler, Tom Griffen, Cory Mayfield, Mitch Lum, Joshua Dawson, Chris Dean. Then there's the rest of us, not sure where I fit in if at all.
