Default AC Voltage Regulator

I was given a box of 1930s memorabilia today. A 1930 Wirt voltage regulator ( dimmer switch). It has 7 adjustments as seen through the small window. Will post the rest of the items when i can indentitify them. ALClick image for larger version

I have a similar device, though not as fancy. I picked it up for 5 bucks, if I remember correctly. It works fine. The chain is to rotate it, bnecasue it gets pretty hot.

I assume mine is just a rheostat, becaue it gets pretty hot and it looks very simple and compact.
