Default 3hp Lister No.CS25358 Spec. 28/10

HARRY!!! I can’t post photos.

I picked up this engine yesterday. It came with a Lister 32/43V 40a DC generator also.

The engine has a small piece chipped out of the flywheel (I have the missing piece) but otherwise seems undamaged. There was oil in the water jacket when I removed the cooling lines though. I’m going to drain the crankcase next and see if there’s an ny water. It turns over free and has compression. I haven’t turned her much as I don’t want to pump any water around if there’s any present. The rack is stiff and the pump plunger stays up after injection. The fuel system will have to be gone through. If she’s not cracked I’d say she’s an easy runner.

Edit: spec no.208/10

I’ve been getting error messages when I try to upload pictures too but with repeated attempts I am eventually successful.
Last batch took about 6 tries.

Managed to move it under my lifting beam and get her high enough to drain the sump. No water, lots of sludge.

Cleaned the crankcase sump. Lots of sludge in the lower sump but the screen wasn’t plugged. Crankcase inspection gets a pass for refill and start attempt.

Fuel pump freeing up with penetrant and working by hand. I will make sure this is good before any attempt to start though. I should build me an injector tester...

Con rod dipper seems “non factory” but I honestly have no idea... muh first Lister

Con rod dipper definitely not factory.

HIGH NOTE: SHE RUNS!!!

Just kept working the the fuel pump and she came free, water bottle of fresh diesel gravity feed to the injection pump and she lit right off!

These Lister engines have such a sweet sound to them. I could listen to this engine all day and not get annoyed.

Scale them WAY down... never had to do that before.

A few more

Today I’m planning to clean things up a bit, pull the water jacket covers off and clean inside if I can. It came with a concrete base, I may mount it back in that for more run time. I also got the original Lister fuel tank for it.

A few more pics. Heading to the lumber yard, going to build a quick skid to mount this to, the concrete base would need to be set in the ground and I want this more mobile for now.

Does anyone have any info about the generator? I haven’t even looked at it yet, there’s a panel in the building this came from that I have to go get also.

Oh, and the con rod dipper... it’s threaded into the bottom of the rod. It looks home made from a 5/16 or 3/8” bolt that’s been milled or ground with two flares on either side to thin it down to about 1/8”... is the dipper supposed to be hollow to oil the rod? There are oil holes on top of the big end to allow oil to the bearing also... this just doesn’t look factory at all but I have no previous experience with these.

Is there a serial number listing for manufacture dates?

Just picked up some lumber, going to get her bolted down to a skid, mount the generator also. I’d like to have her solidly mounted before I run her again. It’s smooth but I held the rack back on start up as she fires real aggressive coming up to speed!

Started bolting the sled together. 6x6 runners, 2x8 planks. The engine sits on the middle two, generator on the other. Need one more, forgot to measure twice the fuel tank will sit above the generator and the space at the other side will be for a screen cooler. I think I have a Jabsco belt driven water pump at the shop somewhere a small cast iron centrifugal would be cool though.

Was all set to set her on the skid but figured better clean her up first. Just using some diesel fuel, soft brushes and rags. There’s lots of nice original paint coming up but it’s a lot of work, maybe I’ll just rattle can it, I’ve got a couple cans of CAT yellow kicking around

Half the engine cleaned and I’m really happy with how much original paint came up.

Thank you! The older fellow I got the engine from stopped in today and dropped me a nice clean photo copy of the original manual. The engine wasn’t ready to run when he got here but I showed him the video and I swear it made his year. I’m still elbow deep in dirty paint brushes and diesel scrubbing... I promised he’s see it run before I leave for 2 months of work in August. Pressures on.

Mate, I'm going to have to kick your butt. Ever since this post showed up, I've been off watching videos of the Lister CS 6/1. Now I want one! I'm going to have to save up and hope I can find one. F the damn EPA banning such a fine engine!

Some Lister music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxSdXS8P6S8

I do wonder, Which is better? The hopper cooling or doing what George did, and find an old steam heat radiator? I like the way George's cooling system looks. https://d188rgcu4zozwl.cloudfront.ne...ces/2115102093 Probably would last many times longer as well! Cast iron steam rad of this type. https://www.pexuniverse.com/4-sectio...-iron-radiator

Glad I was able to give you the itch! Interesting idea with the cast rad. I haven’t really decided what to do just yet. I’m not sure I want a tank as high as required to circulate by convection. I leaning towards an engine driven circ pump.

Might be worth watching the scrapyards for a 3 or 4 section steam heat rad. They shouldn't be too hard to source. The link above has them new for a decent price. The engine circ pump might make with a cast rad a very efficient cooling system. Definitely want to run 50/50 antifreeze so the inside of the engine cooling passages don't rust shut. Some reports I've read, suggest rust can be a problem with the Lister engines.

Me, I think a Lister CS 6/1 spinning a large case GM or Ford alternator would be ideal to recharge a bank of batteries. They sip fuel and run pretty quite. Perfect really!

Robert
