Default 1924 or 1925 Kohler Model D Light Plant

Just bought a Kohler Model D Light Plant at an auction. It has serial number 8472.
I would like to find as much information I could about it. Electrical diagrams would be great, but anything on the engine as well. Of course, I'd like to know if parts are available. I found out a little information at this site......
http://www.oldengine.org/members/die...ler/Kohler.htm
which gave me the manufacture date of 1924 or 1925.
It's missing the "auto start" box, generator cover, and I'm not sure what else.
I see in the web site mentioned, another model without the "auto start" box, but in it's place, it looked like an electrical "knife switch" box.
It hand cranks over good, but doesn't seem to have much for compression.
Would this be a Kohler engine, or other?
Thanks for any help! Tom

The Ds only generate about 50 to 60 PSI cranking pressure. These engines are low compression, ratios about 5:1. Without seeing a close up of the wiring, it is hard to see if the auto start box is missing or if the unit was built as a hand start only. If all the wiring goes to a terminal block with 4 or 5 posts on it, then the auto start box has been removed. The engine and generater still can be run as a hand start unit. The chke rod will have to be held manually, as the engine is cranked, and the mag will have to be manually shut off at its kill terminal to stop the engine. generation and engine speed are preset.

Andrew, Thanks for your reply!

There's five wires hanging loose near the
top of the generator, but I didn't notice
a terminal block. Can I make a terminal
block and jumper the five wires together
in some fashion to make it generate?

Note in the photo two other disconnected
wires hanging loose. What would they be for?

Also, What's the large capacitor looking thing
hanging loose?

Thanks for your help! Tom

the brush has fell through the holder, that needs to be fixed first. you can start it with 24 volts (most likely) if you wire it right. Does it have a data plate? these came in DC and AC and multiple voltages. Despite being a 4 cyl, it's rated for like 6-8 horsepower max

Robert,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it has a data plate. It's set up
for 115v DC, 1500 watts. It would be nice to find a
wiring schematic for it! If the unit is set up for manual
start, would I need the 24v battery supply?
Being it's DC, what am I going to be able to do with it????
Would this gen set have been used on the farm back in it's day?
Some farms had windmills, battery sets, etc., DC powered?
Correct? Or other useage?
Thanks, Tom

DC will run light bulbs, heaters without a fan, universal motors, and some other things. back in the day some tube type radios were AC/DC. Don't forget that at that time, some parts of large citys were all DC. this ol' thing is more of a curiosity then a usefull object now a days, but you can sure string up some lights for it to run. you are also missing the regulator.

you don't need battries to hand crank it, but it certainly has to run OK to hand crank. nothing worse then a balky hand crank motor. i've got one that is the AC version, complete with the auto start box. It IS pretty neat
