Default Need help starting a 15hp reid

Recently aquired a 15HP Reid, my first engine of this type, I've been collecting engines for 20yrs, never got into this type of engine before. It has a hot tube and a magneto.I have tried starting this engine and all I get is a hit or two and it stalls. What I need is someone with knows these engines to give me step by step instructions on how to start it, from how much the gas valve should be opened and on.Standing behind the engine the charge cylinder is on the right (I beleive it's refered to as a charge cylinder)

start with the piston on the charge cyl all the way in,then roll flywheels foward towards the cyl i/2 turn then back the oppisite direction 1/2 turn till the charge cyl piston is back all the way then in one good hard roll roll flywheels backwards ( top of flywheels toward cyl ) to start ..i light the intake before starting and get the flame 6-8 inches high to set my fuel...reids flood very easy best to start lean and work your way up..once it fires tap the gas valve open a little more till its running .. the air intake plays a big part also so give it about1/2 way open to start you may have to choke it a little too... if you use your foot in the spoke kicking it remember on the hot tube it can fire at any point on the compression stroke.so do not be in that thing on compression you do not want to ride the flywheel ... hope this helps as i was in your position this spring learning how to get my 12 going, but i had some good help and made some friends in the process..if i missed any thing someone else chime in cause i've only had 1 cup of coffee this morn......good luck.....john

When encountering a Reid that will fire once or twice then quit the first thing I check is the crossover valv. It might be sticking or the nut on the bottom may have loosened. Bill Klein

what regulator are you using. are you using the hot tube or the mag. does it have a governor and if so is it hooked up. do you have an acumulator tank. any photos will help. i have helped 5 people get their reids running in the past 3 months, one allready today. e-mail me if you want.

Listen to the guys on here, they really helped me get my 15HP Reid going. Check out some of the help they gave me on my posts. One thing to take to heart, don't use your foot to ride the spokes to crank it. I'm still hobbling around with a brace on my leg where it kicked me at my first engine show on 19 June.

Dave.
