Default Bates & Edmonds to Hill Diesel

Looking to clear up some anomalous information on the transition of Bates & Edmonds into Hill Diesel.

1- The info I have states Olds bought James Edmonds’ share of B & E in 1924 and, apparently, renamed it Hill Diesel almost immediately. He called it "Hill" after the guy who was running the place, Harry Hill. So what about Marion F. Bates? Was he still involved. I looks like he died in 1926.

2- When did the Bates & Edmonds “Improved” Bull Dog oil engine debut? I have a copy of an old Bull Dog brochure from Jack Heemsoth that appears to be from 1921. That improved engine evolved into the Hill Type V, which apparently left the Hill lineup around 1928, when Hill abandoned the Hvid system and went to high pressure fuel injection.

3- Does anyone have any information on the Hill 8VA? It was a V8 diesel that made 185-200 hp, had a 5x7inch bore and stroke. I see it listed for 1934 and mentioned in 1936. Other information talks about it as a short lived engine. It's gone by 1940 as far as I can tell.

Jim, I can find a few pictures and a sectional drawing of the v-8 hill if that will be of interest. Also a small amount on the small opposed piston engine.

Cool, and thanks, but hile I'd like to see what that V8 looks like for personal curiosity sake, mainly I'm after verifying the years it was in production.

I have seen the opposed piston engine.

Jim,
My 1949 Diesel Engine Catalog lists Hill Diesel as producing just three engines, a 2R, 4R and 6R. All having a 3-1/2" bore and 5-1/2" stroke, rated 10 to 60 horsepower. I would love to see pictures of the earlier V8 as well, and the opposed piston engine they built. Sounds very interesting. I just discovered the "Sun-Doxford" transverse beam opposed piston ship engines. You need to do an article on them. There are a few neat videos of them on youtube.

Chris
