Photo onan 15HQ3R no power.

i have an old onan 15hq3r 1010e serial#47b56 2240 that i try to fix but need some expert help with the electrical part. its an old bell co unit on a trailer. the 4 cilinder continental starts right up and purrs like new.when i turn on the power toggle switch the engine starts to come under load only when the volt dial and rheostat dial are turned off. the volt and amp meters on the dashboard give no reading but do move a little.the volt reading on the 2 load wires fluctuates between 0 and .8v .on two brushes i measure 14 volts, on the other two nothing.this generator looks all original and not much tampered with, i would like to bring it alive but i do not know much about generators. maybe somebody on this site had a similar problem and knows how to fix it. thanks.

I can send you the parts and operator manual till the experts come along. Just need a email. John May can look your wiring diagram up too.

The amp gauge will read 0 until you plug something in and draw some amps through it.

have you tried applying a load to it?

Your voltmeter could be broken.
Do you have an voltmeter to check?

As for the voltage, thSt will raise and lower your voltage kind of like a fine tune.

As for the other one that's the field voltage, if you turn it all the way counterclockwise it should regulate for you, if your regulator is broken then you can turn it to the right and increase voltage to the field manually.

I am concerned about the brushes.
Please inspect them all and make sure the connections are not broken off.

made April of 57. nice looking onan.. like scoops said start with your brushes, make sure they move freely in there slots and check the rings are not all dirty.. scotch bright works wonders on the slip rings

from yours pics of the back of the control panel you have some pretty corroded connectors and open wire covers.. or even broken (inside) wires going to your gauges and etc.. I would get a ohm meter and test all the wires for resistance just to be safe.

thanks for the info, yes one slipring is dirty. will clean tomorrow and see.my concern is the engine really sounds like its pulling a load while no load is connected. could it be shorting?

A generator that old probably has a DC exciter generator coupled to the rear of the main AC alternator shaft. You may need to clean the commutator and free the brushes up on that one too. The fact that you have 14 volts at the brushes on the sliprings is a good sign.

Like Scoops said, the field rheostat has a toggle switch that the wiper hits when you turn it all the way counterclockwise. This will bypass the rheostat and let an automatic voltage regulator control the field. Some sets have a simple Auto/Manual switch on the panel instead, but the aim was to be able to operate without the AVR in an emergency.

Apparently AVR's weren't very reliable. The older sets that I have seen usually have an electromechanical/finger regulator like a RegOhm or similar GE etc which have a series of contacts in the field circuit that are closed and opened by the pull of a magnet controlled by the output voltage.

You probably should clean the surface of the rheostat where the wiper touches it. It's possible that the whole thing is open circuited, but you should be able to take an ohm meter and test the function of it Just moving it through it's range will help clean it up as well. The rheostat may need to be in the circuit (turned all the way down) for the AVR to be able to properly control the field voltage to the exciter.

It's a nice old generator!

Good luck!

If yours has the Regohm voltage regulator. Check the resister on it. Sliding adjustment on it. Common for it to get rusty breaks off or has a loss of contact.

Any shop that deals with resisters will have the band.
