Default Onan 2.5LK-1RV

I have owned " Brutus , " my 2.5LK-1RV for many years, & it has been run a lot. I don't use it as much anymore , but it recently failed to start. I looked at the points & they were badly burned, so I bought new points & condensor. The copper strap attached to the point box frame & the points had deteriorated to where the end at the points was broken off, too. I did not have any this copper sheet metal to make a new one, so I ran a piece of 16g. wire in place of the strap.
I spun the engine over & there is not any fire at the points, OR the plug. Today, I am going to open it up & test the coil. I remember years ago putting a simple 12v coil from an old junk car on it to get it running. Will another generic 12v coil be OK, or should I invest in the Onan part 166-0278 & should I get the coil condensor, 312-A58 as well.
I would like to get it running, because I will be selling it.

Before you go through the trouble of removing the air shields to look at the coil, try this: put a 12 volt test light between ground and the wire from the points box to the coil. When you crank the engine, the test light should flash.

If the light is steady on, the points are not making contact or there is no continuity between the coil wire and the points.

If the light is steady off, there is a short from the points to ground. This can be a short in the points box, the points are not opening, or an oil level or high temperature cutoff switch, if used, is malfunctioning.

Sorry for the delay, but I was away .

My 2.5 LK -1RV still won't start.
To recap ;

Would not start, & found points in very bad condition. Replaced points & condensor . Thin copper strap from points to terminal at bottom of points box was broken, so I replaced it with a 16ga. wire .
No spark at the spark plug. Removed cover to look at coil, & negative post of coil completely out of coil & dangling loose. Replaced coil, using generic auto 12v coil Had to make a new wire from bottom of points box to NEG, side of coil. STILL no spark at the plug. I DO have power at the POS side of coil when I turn power switch on. When I try start switch [ spring loaded, there is still no spark at the plug & motor spins over well.
Any help would be great appreciated !

I suggest that you perform the test above and go from there.

No fire at bottom of points box with switch on & motor spinnin..ONE other thing I forgot to mention. I had to replace the short wire from bottom of points box to screw mounting the fuel pump, too. It was rotted.
I am testing in with spark plug out & plug grounded, so I don't run battery down.

Check the bolt that goes through the point box. Where the point wire hooks up. Some times the insulators break up allowing the point bolt to ground out.

Are you are talking about the square " fiber " pieces in those connections ?? They were brittle & crumbling. I put that back together as good as I could. Am I right that there is the lead from NEG side of coil on the bottom , then the ground to fuel pump mount, then the wire , I put in which replaced the copper strap ?? Must all these be separated from each other by a fiber piece ???

I never have gotten this generator to start again. I have a bad back & neck & cannot keep trying to work on it.

Anyone want it ?? Located in North Central Florida, just South of Gainesville.
