I've got a 7.5DKDFL and I'm running into a similar low voltage issue. My output is two 120V legs, single phase. I am getting 83V at a standard household receptacle.

I have a thread on my generator here. Pictures, including nameplate, are in post number 6. Post number 62 notes my current low-voltage issue (not a lot of detail).

I'm assuming that I have a YD generator head: is this brushless? I have manuals (from online) and they suggest that I most likely am running a transformer as the voltage regulator, though it also states that the boards(?) are optional (generator seems like it wasn't speared any expense). No idea what I have, or where I should look: inside the control box, the one with my gauges and switches, or?).

Have not established if the problem is now "permanent," only that it's been inconsistent and I'd figured that it was just "rusty" from not being run under load for a while. At one point it was producing requisite voltage under load: two runs ago. Messing around with some fueling issues and now it's once again failing to produce usable voltages.

Because this unit has a frame and cover on it it's a bear to access most things (takes nearly 1/2 hr to remove the top plate!).

If it's got a transformer then that would be the first thing to look at?

You do not have a YD gen head that is the same as the J series onans , though it is very similar , it does use the same brushless exciter coil as the J series. You will have to get the top off of the control box to verify that it has transformer regulation or an electronic regulator. I am betting that it has the transformer style, I have never seen an electronic regulator in a DKD though I have heard that they exist. Once you can verify which type then we can get into specifics. Cheers Dan

Dan, thanks for the reply. Yeah, will need to dig into this thing. Will the transformer be located inside the panel box (with gauges and switches)? (maybe I'll get lucky and find a minor disturbance in wiring from rodent activity)

Should I start up a new thread on my particular genset and problem, or does it sounds close enough to the original to continue to include here?

DieselBound, it would be better to start a new thread with complete model and serial numbers in the subject line if you could.
