Default Onan 5500 Generator Error Code 58

I just purchased a Jayco Seismic TH from camping world in Dec. of 2014. The trailer has a factory installed Onan 5500 (model # 5.5HGJAB-6755K). When trying to start it for a maintenance run, I somehow flooded it. Proabably over primed it. I was finally able to get the thing started and it sputtered and blew black gunk out of the tail pipe.

Once it was cleared itself, it began running just fine. Maintains constant throttle, no loud noises....nothing. Howeever, it will run for about 10 to 15 minutes on the initial start-up, then stops itself. Throws error code of 58 which is high exhaust gas temp. Looked in service manual, and it says to take to dealer.

Not wanting to down my trailer at the dealership for a month, I called Camping World for tech support. They were nice and courteous, but could not answer my question. Said he would have to call Cummins. I tried calling Cummins too, but was told they will absolutely not give tech support over the phone. Go figure! A customer wants to troubleshoot before bringing item in for warranty issue, and no help! No customer appreciation now days!!

I've looked at other forums and finding no help. Seen everything from bad magneto, to varnishing of carb, etc. My unit runs great before the exhaust heating up and throwing code 58.....every time. Under load and not under load. Engine is clean as a whistle and brand new (2015 trailer). Has 22 hours on it. Gas is clean.

I've taken the spark arrestor plug out and ran the unit as per service requirements. It still cuts off. Did not blow much of anything out of the spark arrestor hole.

I'm at a loss. Any idea would be appreciated.

Thank you

Not familiar with that unit, but lots of others here are. Someone will be along to help shortly. You came to the right place.

Support from Onan has really dropped since Cummins bought them. But since it is under warranty. Take it in. Let warranty pay for it. Also sometimes the code showing. Does not match the problem.

Getting enough cooling air for the engine?? Gen compartment air vents big enough?? Believe the gen installation manual specs out the min size openings.

"blew black gunk out of the tail pipe" ..... is it like hair, muffler glass packing maybe

Its factory installed by Jayco. They put them in almost all their toy haulers, as do other brands. The black gunk was only when I finally got it started. It now runs clean....no smoke or anything. Black gunk seemed like excess fuel or condensation and carbon.

What's the fuel , Gasoline ?
If gasoline fueled, a very rich mix might cause soot, but it's a lean mix that makes high temp. Maybe change altitude adjustment to lower elevation (richer mix).
Does the choke look like it's working normally?

I know nothing about Jayco, but I would still check that gen has at least the min openings for cooling air that Onan specs out. If you bring gen to Onan and they find openings are below min specs they might charge you for the diagnoses, as gen was not at fault. If you brought it to Jayco on the other hand ....

I want to say bad exhaust temp sensor especially since it comes every time even under no load. Just a guess but that is where I would go if I had to pay for it. Cheers Dan

I haven't had much time on the very newest of these units, but, I say it is IMPOSSIBLE to 'overprime' it. The fuel injectors just won't pass fuel, when the set is not running, unless they are broken. Two, I do believe these are catalyst equipped units, and the temp probe has to do with overheating the catalyst and the dangers that could cause. From what I see now, the unit is running rich, the catalyst is working overtime to try to burn the extra fuel, and the temp probe is picking that up. First would be fuel pressure check, and make sure the diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator is not burst causing raw fuel to be dumped into the intake. I am sure there is an o2 sensor in the loop as well.

Also, I would not doubt one bit that some camper manufacturers don't give them adequate cool airflow. These units 'suck' and 'blow' from the bottom, so it's not hard to build an unintentional air trap and make them breathe their own hot air. Seen it with my own eyes.

Agreed that if intake/exhaust vents are too close could recirculate hot cooling air.
Suspect many RV/toy companies don't spend a lot of time designing/testing the cooling.

Service manual 983-0501D says 5.5HGJAB has a carb, no injectors.
Manual says HGJAA and HGJAD have injectors , map, and ect.

Agreed on bad temp sensor or connection, (I have no experience with this model).
Careful, if you take it apart many companies like to use that as an excuse to VOID the warentee and save money on repairs.

Can we get a SN# on the unit? or at least the first 3 digits? I just can't believe they STILL make a carb unit. My revision D manual is from 2006. That makes the info 9 years out of date Besides, does your manual list a code 58 and/or a temp sensor?
