southernloco,

Didn't know if you had this or not.

Also, as has already been eluded to, don't tear into any component if this unit under warranty. Check plugs, wires, etc, yes. Start pulling component parts, no.

It is carburated, and not fuel injected. I have turned the fuel mixture from zero elevation to high altitude. Same results. I'm beginning to suspect a bad temp sensor also. I need to find out at what temp the sensor should kill the engine. Then see if the spark arrestor/muffler is getting hot enough to trigger it.

Thank you all for the responses, giving me some things to check. And, no, will not tear into it and void Warranty. I think this has got to be something simple and would rather fix it myself, than let the dealership have my trailer for a month. Especially, being camping season.

Just a word of warning If they find out you have worked on it. In anyway outside of the normal stuff. Your warranty is gone. You never know who is checking this site out.

Back in post # 11 thumbnail it says: if exhaust temp exceeds 1202 deg F for 2 seconds it shuts down.

It also says check for loose or grounded wires.

Maybe after sitting a while a piece of carbon fouled the spark plug and now has intermittent spark sending extra fuel down the exhaust stream causing the catalyst to over heat giving a code? I would try a new set of plugs and an oil change. Couldn't hurt.

Sounds like there is a service manual for 5.5HGJAB newer than service manual 983-0501D (Jan 2006).

That manual doesn't show a code 58 or any exhaust temp sensor in the schematic for a 5.5HGJAB

Not sure if reviving a 7 month old thread is cool here or not. If not then I offer my apologies and expect someone will set me straight.

I'm having the same problem with my generator - Code 58. It's a 5.5HGJAB-6755J.

Wondering if the OP ever resolved the problem, and if so, how.

I've also been trying to find schematics and a service manual for this unit, but so far to no avail. I believe the part number is A035D011. An older version of the manual (983-0501) is readily available, but does not cover Fault Code 58. Any pointers as to where I could find it?

Looking at the diagnostic procedure for Code 58 posted in this thread, I see one of the steps I should perform is to measure ignition coil resistance. Does anyone that has the service manual know what the resistances should be? The older manual shows two different ranges for left and right cylinders. Would they likely be the same on the newer model?

Would appreciate any help anyone can offer. I'd really like to avoid having to haul my trailer to the not-local Onan service depot, both from a cost and hassle point of view.

Thanks.

A little light reading sent to sleepingdog--has what they need to troubleshoot issue now.

Just my $0.02 worth...... The world was a much simpler place BEFORE all of the electronic crap put on to the newer Onans. Guess I found one of the better my first go round when I bought my old 5.0CCK. Is there any catalyst in the muffler on these sets (5.5HGJAB)? If so, an over rich start with a catalyst will over heat the cat.

Thanks to EricWood for sending me the manual.

I've started working through the troubleshooting guide. Pulled plugs (that was a chore). They look good, but will replace anyway. Gap was spot on. Checked spark - looks good. Tested coil resistance - both around 18.7 kOhm, so within spec.

Unfortunately the schematics in the service manual don't seem to show the exhaust gas temperature sensor, so I am not sure which pins on the controller connect to it. Everything is crammed in there so tight I am not even able to trace the wire without pulling the unit out of the trailer, which I would like to avoid. My thought was to replace the sensor with a resistor to "fake" a lower temperature and see if the engine would keep running. Will continue to pursue this avenue.

Motorhead, I could not agree with you more - way better before any of the electronic crap. This unit does appear to have a catalytic converter. The carb was replaced in it this past summer. Perhaps it is the culprit if it's running too lean. The genny worked fine for a few months after the new carb was installed, then last month started exhibiting this problem. It's gotten worse over time. Initially it would run for several hours before shutting down. Now it's more like ten minutes.
