Exclamation Re: Onan 5500 generator error code 58

Sorry for the long post:

We have a unit that has continually faulted on code 58. I have read through this whole thread and I can't figure out what to do next. I have a 7HGJAD. It is gasoline engine, with fuel injection. I have replaced both fuel injectors, adjusted the valves, I have replaced both magnetos, with plug wires. I have replaced both spark plugs, I have replaced the muffler and exhaust temp sensor. The oil and oil filter has been changed, the fuel filter has been changed. Before replacing the muffler, I pulled the exhaust temp sensor from the muffler, disconnected the flex exhaust from the muffler and ran the unit with load and no load with the temp sensor placed in the exhaust from the flex. Unit ran fine for 30-35 minutes, with no issues, and did not fault. This is what led to replacing the muffler. Still faults on code 58 after replacing all of these parts. Any help would be appreciated. In my opinion, the only thing left to replace is the engine wiring harness, but if that is the issue, why did it run fine for 30-35 minutes? Thanks.

I also forgot to mention, I have replaced the controller as well. I have checked the resistance on both wires going to the exhaust temp sensor from the P1 harness connector and both ohm out fine and look to be in good condition.

You sure it is not just overheating?? A -LOT- of the installs of this model unit cause recirculation of the hot air or restrict airflow. Exhaust should be piped well away from the generator. Inlet air and outlet air need to be wide open and the airflows separated. Because it 'sucks' and 'blows' both from the bottom, they tend to suck in their own hot air and overheat....

I am fairly certain that overheating is not the issue. This unit has ran about 3500 hours the way that is has been installed. With 25 degree mornings here, the unit will start that cold and only run for about 3-5 minutes, then fault on code 58. I have taken infrared readings while running on the muffler, they range from 150-300 degrees, depending on where you measure.

Is this a newer unit? (you didn't specify Spec or serial number)

There is a TSB that might help, if the serial # is between Jan. 2017-Jan. 2018.

I assume that means PLUG WIRES also sooty plug.

The bulletin I mentioned will not apply to your model (doesn't have the affected parts on it.)

Did you ohm end-to-end? Probe sensor plug connector to other end of harness wire socket with a good, secure connection one at a time, and wiggle/flex wire all the way through. If harness shows no signs of chaffing/cuts, I would suspect, if wiring is bad at all, that it would be at the point of connection of where the wire is crimped on to the pin of the sensor connector plug, or the socket connection at the other end of the harness.

Also make sure pins/sockets are not distorted--they make look OK, but could have been distorted to where there is not a reliable contact when connected.

It gets overlooked a lot but check all your grounds. There is a strap between the floating engine sub base and the main mount base. There should be a heavy gauge ground straight from the base to the negative battery post. There are a couple of ground screws under the breaker/computer cover.
