Kraus Marine Engine

I have a Kraus marine engine. It is a three port design with a removable head. Mine does not have any Kraus marking on it at all, but the base looks similar to yours. Please post some more pics. Click on link for more information..

Your Kraus looks like it may be a 2 port engine, and if so will need a check valve with the carburetor to run. Does it have any kind of timer or water pump on it, and what is the part on the rear of the cylinder? Would like to see the other side of your engine.

I have searched a lot for Kraus Engine information over the years. All I have found is a mention of Kraus Bicycle and Machine shops, in records from Michigan department of labor/business listings, and in the book A History Of Marshall.

A few months ago, I did get this reply from the Marshal Historical Society:


This is from The Marshall Historical Society vice president. There is possibly conflicting information about F. H. Kraus (or Krauss) in the book "A History of Marshall" by Richard A. Carver. Much of the book lists what businesses occupied downtown locations.

On page 97 concerning 429 E. Michigan Ave -- In 1885 William Ryan a cooper, located her and in 1891 the John Cronin Grocery was located on this corner. Cronin was succeeded by Krauss Bicycles in 1896.

Concerning 424 E. Michigan Ave. -- F. H. Kraus opened at machine shop at this location in 1897. Kraus moved his business to 114 East Michigan in 1931 and back to his old stand at 424 East Michigan in 1937.

On page 112 concerning 114 E. Michigan Ave., -- George Krauss bought the John M. Kast Saloon for $2,600 in 1883 and operated it until it closed in 1915 when the Krauss and Krauss Bicycle Shop opened at 114 East Michigan. In 1914 The Krauss Machine Shop moved to 424 East Michigan and Schlotter's Beauty Shop moved in.

At least, it's confirmation that the Kraus or Krauss machine shop existed in at two locations on Michigan Ave. The book contains no more detail about the business.


We have the only two Kraus engines that I know of. If you find any information, please post here and or on oldmarineengine.com.

Hi Jim, here are a few more pictures of the engine. Thanks for the information, the previous owner told me it was a machine shop on Michigan ave. also maybe he got the info from the same place you did? I live about 20 miles from Marshall and never knew there was any engines built there. This engine has a wire that rubs on a brass screw on the crank for a timer, pretty crude and not really any adjustment to it, might not be original?

The diaphragm on your engine & the flywheel counter weight reminds me of this Dubrie (see attached pics).

Thanks for posting the extra pictures. Neat water pump set up, and looks like it could be original. Maybe it had a swing timer behind the flywheel.
