Default Onan 4BGEFA info wanted

Hello, I have found an old Onan in an RV that a friend has. It has not run in at least five years since the RV was parked. The Onan tag reads 4BGEFA26100K for the model number and J933085622 for the serial number. I know is it only a 4000 watt and 1800 rpm but want to know if this style/type of Onan is a decent one to have for a spare generator at the farm? Any information about it would be greatly appreciated and what it roughly might be worth if I were to buy it. Thank you

Made October 1993. If you can get it to run, it will be an excellent 4kw spare genny. Offer $100 especially if you have to pull it. I seriously doubt the that the owner will demo it for you since the owner will never get it started and if you are mechanically inclined, it may be better if you don't start it otherwise the seller will insist on a prime price for it. Do a complete check over. If the oil is OK and it has compression (not seized) and it is not physically beat up, it will run providing you know what to do.

Since it has not been run for years the slip rings will be oxidized. Need to clean them with scotchbrite pad before making AC or the ~ $220 AC voltage reg VR1 will very likley die when you run it, if it has not already died if he ran it after sitting for months.

Here is the build sheet and wiring diagram.

Use this link to get manuals. When at the site press Cntrl+F on keyboard to search for BGE and find manuals that apply.

It's a good generator, but it has a number of shortcomings. Chief among them is easy rodent ingress into the generator end. Inside the generator end is a plastic arm with two magnets that trigger the electronic ignition. If a mouse builds a nest inside, the nest will break the plastic arm when the motor is cranked. This will require disassembling the generator end to replace the plastic arm. If the rodent nest has cloth fragments, it will strip the plastic starter pinion gear. Before you try to crank it, remove the starter and look inside for a mouse nest.

For farm use I strongly suggest building a rodent proof enclosure and use 1/4" hardware cloth to cover the air intake and exhaust areas to prevent any furry little creatures from building a nest inside.

Go to the Twinslan site and pick up the manuals: http://www.twinslan.net/~n0nas/manuals/onan/

Looking at the print you see T1 through T4 on the stator.
I have a BGE and I have never seen one connected in an Eddison 3 wire config.
Were there any made this way?

I'll SECOND building a rodent proof enclosure. I didn't have much trouble except a stray acron till I left a roll of toilet paper next to gen. Then found scraps of it all crammed inside cooling fins of gen. I plan on making a removable wood cover box for it. Believe cooling air goes in/out the bottom so need to screen that area too.
---------------------

Not sure what you mean by Edison 3 -wire system, I assume you mean 120/240 output.

The gen has two 120 V windings, from factory they are wired in parelle to make 120 only. Each breaker tapps off the L1 buss ( at TB1) to make two circuits of 120 ( WRT neutral, L0) similar to what happens in a house circuit breaker panel.

By moving a few wires the gen can be reconfigured to output 120/240, IF they brought out ALL 4 T wires from the stator, sometimes the tied the neutrals together and only brought out 3 T leads. If interested ask and I'll post link to my modification thread.

--------------------

Before I bought my similar gen I checked if $800 rotor was good. I unplugged AC voltage reg and measured across slip rings, should be 20.25-24.75 ohms. And not grounded. Measure to rings not thru brushes, ring surface oxides and gets high ohms.

Also to check $800 stator, I unplugged reg, hotwired engine to run , applied car bat ( 12VDC) across brushes. Should get 40-50 VAC out the T windings, 55-60 out the Q windings. this assumes gen is running at normal rpm (1800)
