Arrow Twin Billy/Goat Sleigh Harnas, Hatlers, Bells Sets from 1890

Ok an brandnew thread today on the horse chanel of Smokstak.

It is going to be an very special thread because we realy have found something stunning special and something that almost not exist anymore.

This item gos about an twin goat halter, harnas, bells sets that once had belonged towards an very rich children goat sleigh.

An long time ago Jaap received an tip that there was an dubble very early goat sleigh child set hidding in an old cellar under an very huge old farm in the province Friesian in the North of Holland.

Now i am going to write down what is told next towards this item.

On an stormy winterday Jaap arrived on the very old farm far in the north of Holland.
When Jaap was drinking coffee with the older men and owner of the farm then he started to talk about carriages and horse sleighs.
Suddenly the older men started to sit straight in his chair and start talking.
When we where kids we had an large old goat wagon and goat sleigh set.
We realy have used it many times and it was realy fun.
With goat sleigh riding we placed the goats in front of the sleigh and drove arround the farm and shets many times.

The goat sleigh and wagons went lost in the years but the halter harnas sets are still somewhere in the cellar under the farm.
After this coversation the old men went downwards with Jaap towards the cellar and an very old dirty huge box showed up.
When Jaap opened the box he was stunned what he saw.
It was an dubble goat sleigh harnas set way back out of an almost forgotten old time.
The old men start telling.
I will not use this set anymore because i am old now but if you can find an very good new owner then he shoult take care for it further.

Now goat wagons are still to find not to many but sure they are pretty rare.

An Goat sleigh is super rare.
Only an coople dit survive.
2 Years ago we found one.

https://www.smokstak.com/forum/showt...ht=goat+sleigh

But an original early leather goat sleigh harnas bell set is not to find anymore.
We do only one known in existance and that is an single version.

So going to say towards the horse stuff collecting Smokstakers hold your breath there is something super rare going to show up here.

Going to start up with an very old ancient Dutch painting from out or close towards the Dutch golden age.

These kind of goat wagons realy have been in existance.
Now they are gone but there is an later model hidding in the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam.

More to come.

The sleigh in the photo is most beautiful. I did not know that the 'frisbee' had been invented so long ago!!

Mike thanks,

Wel the frisbee must been somekind of an ariool that the most early holy statues have on there head or an cockie.

This goat wagon model does not exist anymore only 2 later versions dit survived.
Picture 1 is one of the 2 survivors.

I am not go in to the goat wagons to collect but there are some realy awesome models to have.

When the box arrived 4 days ago we where very surprised how amazing these sets look but we where also very surprised how dirty the set was.
We had 2 buckets full with dirt, mud and swet goat water.

We are bulding up the hole set at the moment in the little sleigh museum.
Yesterday went towards the horseshoe smit to pick up some horse shoes to make wall hangers.

In picture 2 there is another goat wagon to see.
Posting this picture because want to show how leather goat wagon harnasses looks.

There is an huge difference between an leather wagon goat harnas set and an leather sleigh goat harnas set.
Because an leather sleigh harnas is having an sleigh bell system on top...

Next the first views on an real ancient leather goat sleigh harnas set...

Ok we are going to start up,

For most of the watchers for the first time in there life and real watch at some realy ancient goat sleigh harnas sets survivors.

The director of the National carriage collection told once.

In the early horsesleigh time there where no pony’s.

The first Shetland Pony’s came was imported arround 1880 towards Holland (Queen Wilhelmina child time).

Before 1880 horse sleigh and small sleigh pull was done by horses, donkey’s, goats and dogg’s.

There where before 1880 small horses for children and little sleighs but not the Shetlanders yet.

I have taken the date 1890 beause it coult be made before or after 1890.

This set is realy intresting.

First it have been once made for an twin/dubble sets of goats in front of an sleigh.
Second it contains and thirth set also called as an working and learn set.

When i was an little boy i went for 4 weeks towards and farm that had an lot horses.
They learn horses to stand in front of an carriage.

There was somekind of huge wooden sleigh where they placed young horses in front to learn the carriage pulling and they also had leather harnas learn working sets to train with the horses.

Have been study all the sets and there are an coople small leather parts missing but the most importand parts dit survive......

It was quiet some work to buld up this wonderful display.
First we had to clean all parts from dirt and mud.
Polish all the old brass parts including the eagles on top of the bells.
Then we had to fix some parts of the leather and put them in the leather oil.
Then we had to make the small horse shoe holders and i found the old coat rack on the old family farm last year that we had to make empty.

It is all coming together now in this wonderful display..

More to come.

Going further.

The set contains 3 goat head halters.
And 2 main heavy leather goat belly holders.
The work/ learn version is an canvas one.

On of the halters have an crome bit the other old steel.
The grome one must have been an replaced one in the years.

Goat sleigh bells setts dit not had plumes arround the bells like the horse versions have.
The danger was that the goat woult be eating the plumes........

Thumbs up Re: Twin Billy/Goat Sleigh Harnas, Hatlers, Bells Sets from 1890

How can we see what is the difference betwean an horse sleighbell harnas set and an goat sleighbell harnas set.......

Watch picture one and two.......

Picture 3 the canvas working practise and learn goat harnas.

Picture 4 the 3 goat head halters including th thirth the working and practise version.

This set was laying already on long time ago on our radar and was bought with option an long time ago.

Suddenly now there is an lot intrest in this set with people that start to bid on it dubble the price what we gave to it.
Including an person that collect for years horse sleigh bells systems.

It seems with the last items that we found for the little horse sleigh museum The intrest realy start to grow now in this here in Holland.

Wel they are now save on display......
