There are a couple good videos of the one in Freeport including this one shot by the Great Great Grandson of the original owner.

And this one by tubalcain aka mrpete.

Enjoy !

It will be set up again next week for our 47th annual show on August 5th 6th & 7th, but there's a chance it might not be running if we don't get enough horses (and or mules) to power it with. We seem to have a problem with the horse people feuding amongst themselves which is not good. It's pretty common for horse people to not like steam engines popping off and blowing whistles and tractors backfiring etc., and the owners of those units not being too fond of the horse people because they don't like being blamed for potentially scaring the horses ( even though we've NEVER had any real problems with that ever happening), but when they start feuding amongst themselves bad things happen.

If anyone has horses they'd like to bring to Freeport let me know and I'll try to pass the info along to the right people.

In the mean time, plese enjoy the videos.

Last one I saw sell was either a 6 or 8 horse unit that went for around 6 Grand at a local auction.

It was one that my dad had fabricated a lot of parts for to get it up and running for the previous-previous owner back in the 1970s.

They're out there, but rarely ever show up for sale.

Mike I'm not real picky on how many horses, that two horse would be great if I could afford it. Private message me the details please.

Thanks for the great videos Otto-Sawyer. Sure don't get to see them work like that very often anymore.

Thanks. . .

Hopefully we can make everything work with getting horses lined up again for next years show (and beyond). It ended up setting as a static display this year.

Sometimes it takes outside help to keep things going when politics and attitudes get in the way within a club.

Been doing what I can and have had the help of a few others the last couple/few years trying to undo some of the damage that was done the last 10-20 years, but it takes time.

A friend has an 8 horse that he restored and uses for demo purposes on occasion. He's got three more laying in the weeds and no desire to sell them.

Unhappy Re: Horse power sweeps

Can't say For Sure yet, but rumor has it the Stephenson County Antique Engine Club MIGHT Be selling the 12 Horse Sweep Powered CASE Threshing Machine.

See the two videos of it in Post # 2

We don't have the horses to run it anymore and even if we did get horses we don't have enough WORKING Club Members anymore that want to run it which is a Major Shame as it has been a Key Feature of our show for 40 Years.

I'll post updates once the board decides for sure what they're doing, but it sounds like a couple people have already asked about buying it but i don't know how serious they are or if they are making any $erious offer$ or if they're thinking we're gonna give it to them (which ain't gonna happen)

Here's a single horse running a hay press at recent Cumberland(Maine) Fair. That's Vern with the pitch fork & Jim providing the power. Don't know the guy in orange shirt.

I have a Dain Double Geared Burr Mill which Dad used. I set it up and ran it at both Stephenson Co and at Hedtke's show here in Northern Illinois. Setup was a lot of work with stakes and then we had to find a horse or a team of small mules to run it and to find corn to grind. So it just sits now.

I'll eventually put a film camera picture of it on.

We have a One-Horse-Sweep powered baler at Freeport too, but like the 12 Horse Thresher we no longer have the horses (or people) to run it.

The Thresher Had Been powered by a large Gas Engine early on in its life and then a tractor later on before Robert Lamm bought it and we put it back to Horse Power so we Could go that route again but still need PEOPLE. . . So.... at this time it's still up in the air as to what will happen with it.

For the time being it is all in storage until next year while the Club decides what to do.
