Default MEP-016A - Newly Aquired - Need some tips

When hand cranking engine I hear an abnormal rubbing sound from the generator area, kinda like a if you have a brush go bad and the holder starts to dig into the comm. Im sure thats not the problem but would like to inspect before starting the engine.

How do I access the area to inspect, it does not seem to have an access panel.

Sounds like something may have come loose inside. I know the field plates sometimes came unfastened in the 018's. Here are links to a couple of manuals. In my opinion, these are kind of loud and thirsty, at least by today's standards, but good luck, they are kind of neat.

These are brush-less units, could be a bearing (older models have an inspection hatch), stator/rotor not lined up properly, or foreign objects from critter-condos.. there are vents for the blower they can get up into. Need to remove the control box for better a look into the rear end.
