Default Detroit Diesel 671

I have an International tandem dump truck with a 671 with no jake brake. I was wondering if putting an exhaust brake that I have would do any good. Would it harm the engine? Most people think jake brakes on detroits do not help much. I currently have a 671 and an 8V71 in trucks and they work very well in my opinion. Not as good as an old Cummins but still work quite well. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You asked for my opinion .. so here goes;
I've driven trucks with exhaust brakes & they are about effective as stuffing a potato in your exhaust pipe. It sure keeps the engine from running well .... but not much "Braking" to it. Not worth the effort or cost (even if it was free) in my opinion. Get a Jake

The exhaust brakes are only good for quick warmups. Start the engine, throttle it up some and kick the brake on.

not sure they will work on a 2 stroke eng. don't ever remember one .but I worked on heavy equipment all my life

Series 71/92A Jake brakes are not difficult to find, and not very expensive. They typically run $35-75 a cylinder. You will need a valve cover spacer, or a taller cast aluminum valve cover for clearance. You will also need to install an in head oil line for lubrication and a clutch/neutral safety switch. Tee an oil line off of the governor/blower drive housing, or a port in the block, utilizing high pressure oil from the oil filter, or directly from the oil pump is not good for the jakes. I dont think a complete setup would cost you more than $500. The higher the compression, the more effective the exhaust brake will be. You might not get the same bark with a worn out engine as a fresh one. Naturally aspirated 6-71 (no turbocharger) run higher compression pistons, so the bark and braking power will be more noticeable than on a turbocharged engine. I cannot attest to how well they work on a 6-71, but they do work okay on my 4-53T and work great on my friends 6V92TA
