Default External Hard Drives.

Did a recent research trip to Winnipeg. With a couple of side kicks, we spent several days in the archives there and one chap captured a ton of material on his digital camera.
At some point, we want to download this material. I also have a batch more coming from another archive - they have loaded a ton of material on a stick for me. There will be a lot of hi-rez images, etc..
When all this stuff starts arriving, what is the best way of handling it? My old computer may be overwhelmed. I have heard about external hard drives, etc.?
Anyone have any thoughts?
