Default McCormic Deering 1 1/2 hp cylinder binding

New to this site, so here goes. Have a 1 1/2 hp mccormick deering with wico mag ign. Was running great, until fuel pump came loose and broke. Sat for 3 yrs. Finally got new pump and a feww other minor items. Now it's together, seems to be binding (hard spot) when spinning over. Disconnect rod from crank, everything is fine. Reconnect, binding starts.rod bearing is correct, with plenty of oil and grease on all. Help!!!!!!!!!!

Tim:

If the binding is in the cylinder, it could be rust on the cylinder wall or rings stuck in the grooves while the piston sat in the big portion of the bore.

It's probably not much of a problem as long as the binding isn't very heavy.

If nothing else, pull the piston out and find the problem.

Have had piston out twice. Rings look very good, honed cylinder twice.every thing is clean, with plenty of oil. Binds at back of throw.did not do this before fuel pump broke. Have recentered rod to crankshaft.thought it was fixed, not. I am missing something.thanks for any help.

If its binding in the cylinder area and its not the piston or rings than it can only be the small end binding. I know you say its free with the big end off but have you checked the following?
Are the valves sticking?
Is the cam shaft bent? I think this may also drive the fuel pump and if its had a prang in the pump maybe something is not right here.
More likely I wonder if the crank may have tweaked a little when it pranged causing the big end to bind in one spot when its all assembled? The flywheels are a lot of weight to stop in a hurry when something goes wrong and the cranks are soft. What happens if you slacken off the big end bolts just one turn from tight and rotate the engine?

If i disconnect rod from crank, turns freely. When connected and properly shimed,it binds at end of throw.spraying oil at back of piston,it doesn't bind as bad. Drip oiler is working fine.did not have any water in hopper while it was sitting. Can't spin fast enough to start before binding starts.

If the wrist pin end of the rod is hitting the pin boss of the piston, it can cause the big end to bind on the crankshaft.

If you haven't already done so, you might try loosening the mains and shifting the crankshaft so the wrist pin end of the rod is centered between the piston bosses.

Interesting.
